What is the gates scholarship
The Bill and Melinda foundation established the gates scholarship which enables awardees study for free in the University of Cambridge. This award covers all tuition costs and also includes a maintenance allowance. The total amount awarded for the gates scholarship is 17,500euros and a return economy airfare.The award was established on July 10 1990. The award ia a national merit based type Similar to Oxfords Rhodes scholarship for International students. If you’re a citizen of the United Kingdom, you’re not eligible to apply for this scholarship.
Eligibility and Requirements for the gates scholarship
●a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
●applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of
study at the University of Cambridge:
○PhD (three year research-only degree)
○MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree)
○One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt,
Diploma, MBA etc.)
●From at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American
Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic
●A US citizen, national, or permanent resident
●In good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a
4.0 scale (or equivalent)
Courses which are NOT eligible for Gates Cambridge Scholarships:Some courses are not
eligible for the gates scholarship
●BA affiliated (a second BA)
●MBBChir Clinical Studies
●MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
To win the gates scholarship, some general rules apply.
You must demonstrate considerable amount of academic excellence, leadership potential,
volunteerism and extracurricular activities participation.
Applicants for the Gates Cambridge Scholars are expected to be academically outstanding. They must have the ability to contribute significantly to their discipline while in Cambridge. At the start of the application process, potential Scholars are ranked by the department they are applying to. Only the most outstanding candidates are considered further.
This is a very important selection criteria and Successful applicants must be able
to demonstrate a clear ability to lead. Evidence of leadership can be expressed in
a multitude of ways but the capacity of Gates Cambridge Scholars to ‘take others with them’ is central to the success of the programme.
To win the gates scholarship.You must have the spirit of volunteerism in you. This
characteristic of the Gates Cambridge Scholarships is the commitment of any
Scholars to working for the greater good. Although broadly interpreted, this
concept is nonetheless fundamental and sets this programme apart from others of its kind.
Academic Requirements Cambridge Scholarship
Your academic excellence must convince the Trust that your qualifications and aspirations accord with what Cambridge has to offer in its postgraduate programme.You must make a convincing argument for doing a particular postgraduate degree at Cambridge. Hence it is important that you fully research your proposed degree using the Graduate Studies Prospectus and the website of the department to which you are applying.

Application for Gates scholarship instructions:
Applicants must submit an application for graduate admission, a College place and
funding – including a Gates Cambridge Scholarship – via the University’s Graduate Applicant Portal. There are two Gates Cambridge application deadlines: 10 October 2018 (US citizens resident in the USA) and 5 December 2018/3 January 2019 (all
the eligible applicants).
