What Is This Scholarship About?
This scholarship is part of the Japanese Government’s initiative to foster global talent and build meaningful connections between Japan and the international community. Under this program, universities like the University of Tokyo select top applicants and recommend them to MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) for final approval.
For the 2026 academic year, successful candidates will start their graduate programs in October 2026 and receive full financial support throughout their Master’s or Doctoral studies.
Scholarship Coverage
This scholarship is completely funded by the Japanese Government and includes:

Monthly Stipend:
¥144,000/month for Master’s students
¥145,000/month for Doctoral students
Extra allowance for research in specific regions may apply. -

Round-trip airfare (economy class) to and from JapanAdvertisement -
Tuition and Fees:
100% waived — both enrollment and tuition fees -
Housing Support:
Guaranteed accommodation in the University of Tokyo International Lodge (rent approx. ¥50,000–¥60,000/month) for the first year.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this prestigious opportunity, you must:
- Be a non-Japanese citizen from a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
- Be born on or after April 2, 1991
- Hold or be expected to hold a Bachelor’s degree for Master’s applicants or a Master’s degree for Doctoral applicants
- Possess a minimum GPA of 2.30/3.00 based on MEXT’s calculation formula
- Meet English (e.g., IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 72+) or Japanese (JLPT N2 or higher) language proficiency
- Be physically and mentally fit for studies in Japan
- Apply for a program at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo.
Applicants residing in Japan or who have received prior MEXT funding (without meeting the reapplication criteria) are ineligible.
Available Fields of Study
Applicants should apply to a program in science-related fields aligned with their academic background. These include but are not limited to: Physics, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, biological sciences, astronomy, and mathematics.
