Denmark DDEA PhD Scholarships 2026 With DKK 1.1 Million Funding Seeking Applications

The Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy (DDEA) has opened its 2026 PhD scholarship round, offering 13 doctoral scholarships worth DKK 1.1 million each across diabetes, metabolism, endocrinology and industry-linked research.

Who Can Apply for DDEA PhD Scholarships 2026?

International applicants can be eligible if they hold an equivalent Master’s qualification from outside Denmark. Applicants must meet the following core requirements:

• You must apply as the PhD candidate yourself; the Principal Investigator cannot apply on your behalf.
• You must have a Master’s degree from a Danish university or an equivalent foreign degree.
• A foreign qualification must be acceptable under the recognition framework of the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science.
• You must not already be enrolled as a PhD student when the grant notification is issued on 26 November 2026.
• Your principal supervisor must work at the faculty of the Danish university where you intend to enrol.
• The principal supervisor must conduct relevant research as an associate professor or professor.

Applicants who have not yet completed their Master’s examination may still have a route to apply.

In that situation, the applicant should provide a statement from the Master’s thesis supervisor confirming when the thesis will be submitted and when the examination will take place. The final Master’s degree certificate must subsequently reach DDEA within six months of the grant notification. Failure to obtain or submit the degree can result in withdrawal of the scholarship.

The answer depends on which of the three DDEA calls you choose.

The main competition offers eight scholarships for research within:

• Diabetes
• Metabolism
• Endocrinology

This is the broadest of the three 2026 DDEA PhD calls.

2# Classical Endocrinology PhD Scholarships — 3 Awards

DDEA is separately offering three PhD scholarships specifically for classical endocrinology.

Projects should focus clearly on the physiology or pathophysiology of endocrine organs and hormonal regulation beyond diabetes.

Potential research areas include:

• Thyroid diseases such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
• Adrenal disorders including Addison’s disease and Cushing’s syndrome
• Pituitary disorders such as prolactinoma and acromegaly
• Calcium and bone metabolism, including osteoporosis
• Reproductive endocrinology, including PCOS and hypogonadism

Both clinical and basic research projects can be considered, but classical endocrinology must be central to the research question rather than a minor component of a broader metabolic project.

3# Industrial PhD Scholarships — 2 Awards

The Industrial PhD competition provides two DKK 1.1 million scholarships for projects within diabetes, metabolism or endocrinology.

The major difference is collaboration.

Your project must establish a clear partnership between a Danish academic environment and the life-science industry. The research proposal must explain how the academic and industrial partners will work together, while the industry partner must contribute toward the remaining project financing.

You Can Apply for Only One DDEA PhD Scholarship

This is one of the most important rules in the 2026 call. An applicant can submit only one PhD scholarship application across the different DDEA PhD calls in the same application round.

You therefore cannot apply simultaneously for the general DDEA PhD Scholarship, Classical Endocrinology Scholarship and Industrial PhD Scholarship hoping to increase your chances.

Applicants should decide which track matches their proposed research most closely before submitting.

Your Danish Supervisor Also Needs to Meet DDEA Rules

Finding an eligible supervisor is not simply a formality. The principal supervisor must be employed by the faculty of the Danish university where the applicant intends to enrol and must hold an appropriate research position as an associate professor or professor.

DDEA also places restrictions on how many major DDEA-funded PhD scholars or two-year postdoctoral fellows a Principal Investigator can host simultaneously.

Applicants should therefore confirm their prospective supervisor’s DDEA funding situation before applying rather than preparing an application first and discovering an eligibility problem later.

Do You Need to Already Be Enrolled in a Danish PhD?

No—and being enrolled too early can actually make you ineligible. DDEA states that applicants must not already be enrolled as PhD students when the grant notification letter is issued on 26 November 2026.
