Perhaps your dissertation left you with questions you want to investigate further, or teaching has shown you a problem worth studying. For eligible citizens of seven countries, this programme offers financial support to pursue that next step and an academic connection with the University of Central Asia (UCA).

But where do you begin: with UCA’s scholarship application or Cambridge admission? And how do you turn a subject you care about into a convincing case for support? This guide brings those decisions together, so you can move from an interesting opportunity to an application with a clear academic purpose.

A funded Cambridge Route for Future Researchers and Teachers
Applications: Open for 2027–2028.
Citizenship: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan receive priority; Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are also considered.
Study: Master’s and PhD; strong doctoral candidates receive priority.
Support: Tuition, an annual stipend and additional study-related costs.
English: IELTS 7.5, minimum 7.0 per component; or TOEFL 110, minimum 25 per element.
Application route: UCA first, then Cambridge if shortlisted. See both submission stages.
Official information checked: 12 October 2026.

01 Could your academic interests become a strong scholarship case?

This opportunity is aimed at applicants with excellent academic records and a serious interest in an academic career. You need a degree from a recognised university, competence in your discipline and a commitment to contribute to UCA. If you enjoy investigating questions and helping others understand them, that purpose gives your application a natural starting point.

The advertised fields are Earth, Climate and Environmental Sciences; Computer and Data Sciences; Media and Communications; Development Economics; Climate Economics and Public Policy; Public Health and Health Economics; and Cultural Heritage and Society. Other fields may be considered according to UCA’s needs. MBA, EMBA, MFin and BusD degrees are excluded.

Use the Cambridge Course Directory to turn that subject interest into a specific course choice. Ask yourself: what do I want to understand better, and which training would help me investigate it? A previous dissertation, research project or teaching experience can provide the evidence that connects your ambition with your preparation.

Cambridge’s academic entry standard starts at a UK 2:1 bachelor’s degree or international equivalent, with higher thresholds for some courses. Your application needs to meet both the scholarship’s criteria and your course’s requirements.

02 What makes the UCA–Cambridge award worth pursuing?

The University of Central Asia Cambridge Scholarship is offered with the Cambridge Trust through UCA’s Central Asian Faculty Development Programme (CAFDP). It covers university tuition and provides an annual stipend, Immigration Health Surcharge support and visa-cost support under the award terms. UCA also supports travel to and from the UK at the beginning and end of study under its travel policy; PhD research allowances depend on UCA policy and funding availability. Dependants are not funded.

That support gives you a route to pursue advanced study without carrying tuition and living costs entirely yourself. The academic relationship matters too: a UCA mentor works alongside your Cambridge mentor or supervisor, helping you maintain a connection between your studies and the institution you are expected to contribute to afterwards.

For doctoral applicants, research should have direct relevance to Central Asia, with regional fieldwork normally expected in the second or third year. This can give your proposal a clear setting and purpose: explain which problem you want to investigate, why it matters and what your work could contribute.

Scholars remain engaged with UCA during study and contribute afterwards through teaching, research or other agreed activities. This is an academic development opportunity; a subsequent UCA job is not guaranteed.

03 Build an application that explains why this opportunity fits you

Submit to UCA first; shortlisted candidates are invited to complete a Cambridge application. Prepare for both stages together so your course choice, academic evidence and career plans tell one consistent story. Cambridge admission and scholarship funding are separate decisions.

Your UCA dossier What belongs in it
CAFDP application form Name your Cambridge course and department, record your qualifications and complete the declaration.
CV and personal statement Maximum three pages each. Use the CV for evidence and the statement to explain your study interests, career goals and reasons for applying.
Research proposal Maximum three pages for entirely or predominantly research-based courses, or courses with equal taught and research components.
Passport, transcripts and diplomas Include your identity document and academic records in the application package.
Applicant Privacy Notice Complete the acknowledgement, add your name and date, and sign by hand.
  1. Choose the course that advances your academic plans. Identify the skills or research methods you want to develop, then connect them with UCA’s subject priorities. Give your referees your course choice early so they can prepare relevant references for Cambridge.
  2. Complete the official documents. Download the CAFDP application form and Applicant Privacy Notice. Include the signed privacy acknowledgement: UCA will not review applications without it.
  3. Give your personal statement a clear thread. Explain what you have done, what you want to study and how you hope to contribute through research or teaching. Show why the chosen course is the right next step, using a specific project or experience to support your case. Our statement of purpose guide can help you organise that argument.
  4. Email your UCA dossier. Combine the documents in English into one PDF named Surname_FirstName_Cambridge_2027.pdf and send it to [email protected].
  5. If shortlisted, submit through Cambridge. Complete the Cambridge Applicant Portal application and indicate that you wish to be considered for funding. Arrange for your references to reach Cambridge by the applicable funding deadline. The Cambridge Trust’s postgraduate guidance explains scholarship consideration.
  6. Allow for the Cambridge application fee. The published fee is £20 per doctoral applicant per academic entry year, or £85 per other postgraduate application, unless waived. You will receive admission and funding outcomes separately.

04 Three questions that may shape your decision

Can I apply for a master’s if doctoral applicants receive priority?

Yes. Both master’s and PhD applications are accepted, although strong PhD candidates receive priority. A master’s application should explain how the proposed training advances your research or teaching plans and fits UCA’s priorities.

What if I already hold a master’s degree?

The Cambridge Trust generally does not fund study at the same or a lower level than a qualification already held. Its stated exception is a second MPhil required by a department before PhD consideration. For eligible master’s graduates, doctoral study may therefore be the more suitable route.

Does scholarship eligibility allow Afghan applicants to obtain a UK Student visa?

Scholarship eligibility does not override visa rules. Under the current UK visa brake, new Student visa applications made outside the UK by Afghan nationals are refused; existing valid visas are not cancelled, and eligible in-country applications are treated differently.

05 Give your application time to come together

UCA submission: 12 November 2026, midnight GMT+6 (UTC+6). The official 2027–2028 scholarship call sets this deadline for your complete emailed dossier. Start with the course choice and personal statement, leaving time to assemble a readable, signed application package.

Cambridge stage: 3 December 2026 or 5 January 2027, depending on the programme. These are the dates specified by UCA for shortlisted applicants. Cambridge’s general funding schedule separately gives 8 December 2026 and 6 January 2027, with applications and references due by 23:59 GMT. For this scholarship route, work to UCA’s earlier dates; the general schedule does not extend them.
