Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship 2027 Opens: How to Avail?

Ready to lead your own research, but need a working pattern that fits caring responsibilities or your health? The Royal Society’s Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship 2027 is open, offering early-career scientists long-term support to establish an independent research career at an eligible UK institution.

This is a research fellowship for scientists with a PhD, rather than a scholarship to enrol on a degree. It combines salary and research funding with the flexibility to build your career around a genuine, ongoing personal need. Applicants of any nationality can be considered.

Could your circumstances qualify, and what must a UK host agree before you submit? The guide below connects those decisions with the funding rules and application sequence, so you can prepare a convincing case for both your research and the support it needs.

An independent research career with room for flexibility
Status: Open for the 2027 fellowship round.
Audience: Early-career postdoctoral scientists of any nationality who meet the flexibility requirement.
Location: An eligible UK university or research institution.
Award: Up to £1,907,400 over eight years; this is a combined fellowship budget.
English: Supporting references must be submitted in English.
Submission: Flexi-Grant application plus host-organisation approval.
Official information checked: 15 October 2026.

01 Who qualifies for the Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship 2027?

You need both the potential for scientific independence and a demonstrable need for flexible support. Excellent research alone does not replace the second condition.

  • Research stage: You must have completed your PhD and have no more than six years of actual postdoctoral research experience by the closing date, allowing for eligible breaks and part-time working.
  • Personal circumstances: Examples include being a primary carer or managing a clinically diagnosed health condition. The need must be ongoing and relevant to your working arrangements, rather than a hypothetical future preference.
  • Employment and previous awards: Permanent, tenure-track and proleptic posts are excluded. Holding, or having held, an equivalent independent group-leader fellowship can also disqualify you.
  • Research field: The Royal Society supports natural sciences, including biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, computing and Earth sciences. Clinical or interventional research on humans, social sciences and humanities are outside this call’s remit.

My recommendation is to establish your eligibility and host support before investing heavily in the proposal. A suitable department gives your scientific vision a practical home: the facilities, expertise and career support needed to develop it.

02 What does the Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship fund?

The award supports a research programme and your development as its leader. Its ceiling includes several cost categories, so it should not be read as your personal earnings.

The following distinction matters when you and your host prepare the budget:

Support How it works What this means for you
Your salary The fellow’s salary and associated employment costs receive an 80% contribution under the scheme rules. Agree the salary and institutional contribution with your host; there is no fixed monthly stipend.
Research delivery Eligible directly incurred expenses, such as equipment, consumables and travel, can receive 100% support. Build the budget around what your research needs, with a clear justification.
People and infrastructure Research staff and institutional costs are supported at the applicable rates; PhD stipend and fee costs can receive 100% support. Your host’s research office should calculate the full economic costs and commitments.
Flexible working Full-time or part-time arrangements and relevant leave provisions are available. Explain the working arrangement that will help you deliver the research.

Years six to eight depend on a successful mid-fellowship review at the start of year four. Fellows also have access to career development, mentoring and professional networks. Additional childcare costs arising from fellowship-related conferences, research visits or invited talks may qualify under the Society’s childcare travel policy.

I would prioritise a host willing to discuss flexible working and career progression in concrete terms. Those commitments will shape your everyday research experience as much as the equipment budget.

03 How do you apply through the Royal Society and your UK host?

Secure institutional support, develop the scientific case and complete the online approval process. All official links are grouped here, with each destination listed once.

  1. Agree the host arrangement. Use the official Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship page with your proposed department to establish scheme fit, sponsorship and its internal submission timetable. Departmental selection or costing deadlines can be earlier than the funder’s deadline.
  2. Prepare your research and career evidence. Follow the 2027 scheme notes. The research proposal is limited to four A4 sides and should set out a detailed five-year plan within an eight-year vision. Prepare your career history, qualifications, outputs, summaries and relevant ethics information.
  3. Make your independence visible. The Royal Society’s application tips explain how reviewers assess your track record, proposal and host. Show how your questions extend beyond your previous supervisor’s programme and explain your own contributions to collaborative research.
  4. Cost the fellowship with the research office. Use the Royal Society funding guidance alongside the scheme-specific rules. Justify salary, staffing, equipment and other expenses rather than automatically requesting the maximum.
  5. Complete Flexi-Grant and invite contributors. Register or sign in to Flexi-Grant, select the fellowship and invite your Head of Department and two nominated referees. Put flexibility information in its designated confidential fields, not your personal statement.
  6. Finish institutional approval. Contributors must complete their sections before you submit to the host approver. The application reaches the Royal Society only after the required organisational approval; saving your own form is not the final step.

I recommend asking a scientist outside your immediate specialism to read the proposal summary. Specialist reviewers need convincing methods, while a broader panel also needs to understand why your question matters and why you are ready to lead the work.

04 Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship questions worth resolving

These exceptions can change how you assess your readiness to apply. Use them alongside the main eligibility rules.

Can I stay at my current institution?

Yes. Moving is not compulsory, but applicants staying with their current host must explain their route to independence and reasons for remaining. Familiar facilities alone do not make that case.

Does an earlier postdoctoral fellowship rule me out?

Not automatically. The scheme notes distinguish training awards, such as Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellowships, from equivalent awards establishing independent group leadership. The latter can make you ineligible.

Can I apply more than six calendar years after my PhD?

Possibly. Eligibility uses actual research experience and takes career breaks and part-time work into account. Prepare an accurate employment and leave timeline rather than counting calendar years alone.

05 When is the Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship 2027 deadline?

The last date to apply for the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship 2027 is 29 October 2026 at 15:00 UK time (GMT, UTC+0). Your host must approve the application by that deadline. The Society recommends completing contributor statements at least five working days earlier to leave time for approval.

Interviews are scheduled for 16–17 June 2027, with outcomes expected by 31 July 2027. Successful fellows are expected to start between 1 October 2027 and 1 January 2028. Agree your host’s earlier internal deadline now so that scientific preparation and institutional approval can both be completed in time.
