Australia Makes It Easier for Work-Eligible Migrants and Visitors to Apply for a TFN Online
In exciting news for newcomers eager to join Australia’s workforce, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has rolled out a smoother way for eligible permanent migrants and temporary visitors to apply for their Tax File Number (TFN). If you’re already in Australia and hold a visa that allows you to work, you can now apply completely online through the newly launched Individual Auto Registration (IAR) system — no paperwork, no postal submissions, and best of all, no cost.
Who Can Use the New Online IAR System?
The IAR system is specifically designed for people who meet all the following conditions:
- You’re a permanent migrant or temporary visitor
- You’re currently located in Australia
- You hold a valid visa that fits into one of these categories:
- A permanent resident visa
- A visa with work rights
- An overseas student visa
- A visa allowing you to stay indefinitely.
If this sounds like you, you’re eligible to use the IAR to apply online for your TFN — and you won’t need to send in any supporting documents.
What Makes This Update So Convenient?
Applying for a TFN is a must if you want to work legally in Australia, and this new system makes the process seamless and fully digital. Once you complete the application online, your TFN will be mailed to your Australian postal address — so double-check that you provide accurate contact info. Processing may take up to 28 days, and applying more than once won’t speed things up — it will only delay things further.
If you’re a New Zealander, you’re in luck — you automatically receive a visa with work rights when you arrive in Australia and are also eligible to apply using the IAR system.
Already Have a TFN? Here’s How IAR Still Helps
Even if you already have a TFN, the IAR tool can still be helpful. You can use it to:
- Retrieve or check your TFN number
- Get a copy of your TFN notice
- Confirm your identity details on record with the ATO.
Not All Visas Are Eligible – Check Before You Apply
If your visa includes any of the following work restrictions, you cannot apply through the IAR system:
- 8101 – No Work
- 8103 – No Work
- 8116 – No Work or APD Activity
To avoid surprises, it’s a good idea to verify your visa entitlements through the VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) system before starting your application.
What If You Can’t Use IAR?
If you’re not eligible for the IAR system, there are alternative routes:
- Permanent migrants who can’t apply via IAR should use the Australian residents – TFN application.
- Temporary visitors who are currently in Australia but don’t meet the IAR eligibility must complete the paper TFN application form for people living outside Australia — yes, even if you’re physically in the country.
Special Note for Asylum Seekers
If you’re an asylum seeker on a bridging visa, your ImmiCard number acts as your travel document ID. If you’ve previously used other forms of identification, look for document codes like PLO56 or PL56, as these are also accepted in the application system.
Why a TFN Is Important?
Your Tax File Number is essential to work legally in Australia. It ensures you are taxed correctly, can receive superannuation, and access government services. Without it, employers may deduct taxes at the highest rate — and you may miss out on benefits you’re entitled to.
