    Who Can Apply?

    You are eligible if you are an early-career researcher who has either:

    • Completed a PhD (or equivalent higher research degree) by the deadline, OR
    • Accumulated at least four years of equivalent research experience.

    Other key eligibility points:

    • Maximum three years postdoctoral experience (with allowances for career breaks, COVID-19 impacts, or part-time work).
    • Must commit at least 80% of your working time to the funded research project.
    • Open to all disciplines – from STEM to humanities, clinical sciences, and public health – provided your project fits within Wellcome Discovery Research priorities and aims to improve health and human life.

    Application Dates for the 2026 Round

    For the 2026 round of the Wellcome Early-Career Awards, applications will officially open on 23 May 2025, giving researchers ample time to prepare strong proposals. The application deadline for this British Wellcome scholarship is 30 September 2025 at 15:00 BST, and it is important to note that late submissions will not be accepted under any circumstances.

    Shortlisting of candidates will take place in December 2025, followed by the interview stage scheduled for 10–12 March 2026. Applicants are strongly advised to plan ahead and leave sufficient time for their institution to review and approve applications before final submission.
