Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism 2025 — €20,000 Award

In a bold testament to truth, integrity, and the enduring power of the press, the European Parliament has officially opened submissions for the 2025 edition of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism. This prestigious €20,000 award recognizes outstanding investigative journalism that defends the foundational values of the European Union — including democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and press freedom.


About the Prize

Named in honor of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the courageous Maltese journalist and anti-corruption blogger assassinated in 2017, this annual prize shines a spotlight on those who dare to challenge power and expose injustice.

“A free press is the best shield for democracy,” said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. “This prize belongs to every journalist who fights for the facts — no matter how uncomfortable they are.”


Who Can Apply?

This opportunity is open to:

  • Professional journalists and teams of journalists
  • Any nationality
  • Submitting in-depth journalistic work (articles, documentaries, investigations, etc.)
  • Published or broadcast in any of the 27 EU member states

Entries must defend or promote EU core principles such as:

  • Human dignity
  • Freedom
  • Democracy
  • Equality
  • Rule of law
  • Human rights.

Prize Details

  • Award Amount: €20,000 (tax-free)
  • Selection: An independent jury of media experts, civil society representatives, and EU journalists’ associations
  • Award Ceremony: Held mid-October 2025, marking the anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination (16 October).
