Japan’s top research university, SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies), has just opened the gates to one of its most prestigious scholarships — the Kawashima Shoshi Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Academic Year 2026.
If you’re a privately financed international student dreaming of mastering your field in Japan — but worried about funding — this scholarship might just change your story.
Why This Scholarship Stands Out?
Unlike general scholarships open to all, this fund specifically empowers self-funded international students who have shown both academic brilliance and genuine financial need. It’s not just a scholarship — it’s a lifeline for those determined to continue their studies in Japan without financial strain.
Selected scholars will receive a whopping JPY 1,440,000 per year, paid in two instalments (April & October), covering two full years — April 2026 to March 2028.
That’s enough to ease tuition burdens, fund research materials, and even cover daily living expenses in Japan’s thriving academic cities.
Who Can Apply?
This scholarship isn’t open to everyone — only those who truly embody the spirit of excellence and commitment that the Kawashima Shoshi Memorial Fund represents.
You’re eligible if you:
- Are a non-Japanese international student who will be enrolled at SOKENDAI as of April 1, 2026.
- Have an outstanding academic record and a good personality recognized by your professors.
- Can demonstrate financial need to continue your studies in Japan.
- Have a strong command of the Japanese language, since most documentation and communication occur in Japanese.
- Are not receiving any other scholarship worth JPY 50,000/month or more.
Even current AY 2025 scholars may apply again, provided they still meet the eligibility criteria.
Application Method
This scholarship requires a university recommendation — meaning you can’t apply directly to the fund.
Follow these steps:
- Check your department/program office notice for internal instructions.
- Read the official guidelines carefully.
- Prepare all required documents — these often include your academic transcripts, proof of financial need, Japanese proficiency, and a personal statement.
- Submit your complete application: https://www.soken.ac.jp/en/news/2025/20251009.html
After review, the university will nominate the best candidates for final selection by the scholarship committee.
