New Zealand Launches NZeTA for Global Travelers – Apply Now

In a major update for global travelers, the New Zealand government has expanded its Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) program to streamline entry procedures for eligible foreign nationals, transit passengers, and cruise ship travelers. Effective Monday, 3 November 2025, the NZeTA is now open to citizens of China and Pacific Islands Forum countries traveling from Australia under specific visa conditions—adding to the list of travelers already eligible for this visa waiver.

What Is the NZeTA?

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) allows eligible travelers to visit or transit through New Zealand without applying for a traditional visa. It is part of the government’s effort to enhance border security and streamline the entry process for short-term visitors.

Who Can Apply?

You can request an NZeTA if you are:

  • A citizen of a visa waiver country or territory
  • An Australian permanent resident
  • A cruise ship passenger
  • A citizen of China or a Pacific Islands Forum country traveling from Australia with an eligible Australian visa
  • A transit passenger passing through Auckland International Airport from a visa waiver or transit visa waiver country

Validity & Duration of Stay of NZeTA

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is valid for 2 years for most travelers, while airline and ship crew members benefit from an extended validity of 5 years. Each visit under an NZeTA allows a stay of up to 3 months, with an exception for UK passport holders, who may remain for up to 6 months per visit.

For transit passengers passing through Auckland International Airport, the NZeTA permits a stay of up to 24 hours, during which travelers must remain strictly within the airport’s designated transit area.

Cost & Processing Time

The cost of obtaining a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) starts at NZD $17, depending on the method of application. Travelers are advised to submit their request well in advance, as the processing time can take up to 72 hours. While many applications are processed more quickly, delays can occur due to additional checks, so early submission is strongly recommended to avoid any disruptions to travel plans.

Requirements to Apply for NZeTA

To qualify, you must:

  • Be in good health
  • Meet character requirements
  • Have genuine reasons for visiting or transiting
  • Provide evidence of sufficient funds: At least NZD $1,000/month, or NZD $400/month if accommodation is prepaid.
  • Show proof of onward travel

How to Apply for NZeTA?

You can apply for the NZeTA through:

Required documents:

  • A valid passport (must be valid at least 3 months beyond departure)
  • A passport-style photo
  • Proof of onward ticket, accommodation, and finances.

Who Doesn’t Need an NZeTA?

You do not need an NZeTA if you are (Ref):

  • A New Zealand or Australian citizen
  • A holder of a valid New Zealand visa
  • Traveling under specific exceptions (e.g., Antarctic Treaty participants, visiting military forces, or endorsed passport holders).

Who Cannot Use NZeTA?

You must apply for a visa instead if:

  • You’re visiting for medical treatment
  • You do not meet character or health requirements
  • You require a sponsor
  • You plan to renew a visa for another country by visiting NZ.

Important Notice for Chinese and Pacific Island Nationals

From 3 November 2025, Chinese and Pacific Island Forum country passport holders can travel to NZ from Australia using an NZeTA if they hold an eligible Australian visa—marking a major new development in NZ’s visa waiver policy.

Final Tip: Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute!

Though processing takes 72 hours, delays can occur due to security checks. Apply early to avoid any disruptions to your travel plans.
