University of Malta Fully-funded Scholarships 2025 Open for Applications
The University of Malta, in partnership with Malta’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism (MFT), is now accepting applications for the 2025 Islands and Small States fully-funded Scholarships, offering an exceptional opportunity for nationals from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to pursue postgraduate studies in Islands and Small States Research—with generous financial support!

Master of Arts (Research on Islands and Small States)

- Mode: Online (students may choose to study remotely or reside in Malta at their own cost)
- Full tuition fee waiver
- €1,000 research allowance (for up to 12 months for fieldwork, reimbursed against receipts)
- 3 scholarships available.
PhD in Islands and Small States Studies

- Focus: Critical themes such as sustainability, climate and oceans, solidarity, security, capacity building, and more.
- €13,200 subsistence funding (for travel to Malta and research sites)
- Up to €2,000 for return travel to/from Malta
- €1,500 insurance allowance over 3 years
- €2,000 research allowance (fieldwork, training, conferences, data collection, and software)
- 2 scholarships available.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a national of a SIDS eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA)
- Dual nationals holding EU/EEA or non-SIDS citizenships are not eligible
- Preference given to public sector workers or NGO professionals
- Full admission (not conditional) to the University of Malta is mandatory
- Proof of English language proficiency required by July 1, 2025
- Applicants must undergo an online interview as part of the selection process.
