What’s the PhD All About?
You’ll be based at the Institute of Systems Biotechnology under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Christoph Wittmann – a trailblazer in the intersection of biotechnology, metabolic engineering, and sustainable resource utilization. Whether your dream is to combat climate change through circular bioeconomy solutions or to revolutionize health biotechnology with microbial factories – this is your playground!
Your Mission
Join one of two dynamic research projects focused on:
- Sustainable Bioeconomy: Engineering microbial production systems using renewable resources.
- Health Biotechnology: Building microbial platforms for producing next-gen biopharmaceuticals and personalized medicine compounds.
Expect hands-on experience in:
- Cultivating microbial systems (Batch, Fed-Batch, Chemostat).
- Using high-end analytic tools like HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, isotopic tracing.
- Performing gene editing and molecular biology.
- Publishing and presenting your findings in English.
- Supporting teaching and mentoring activities.
Who Should Apply?
To be eligible, you must:
- Hold a master’s degree in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biology, or a closely related field.
- Be proficient in microbiology, fermentation tech, or systems biotech.
- Be passionate about sustainable science and the bio-based future.
- Have solid English communication skills (B2 or above).
- Be motivated, team-oriented, and detail-driven.
Bonus points if you already know your way around molecular biology and lab software tools.
