Germany Residential Fellowship 2025 at Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS)

Are you a researcher or practitioner delving into the social, political, or cultural impacts of digitalization? The Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in Bochum, Germany, is now accepting applications for its prestigious Residential Fellowships for the upcoming year. This unique opportunity offers scholars and experts the chance to advance their projects in an interdisciplinary research community, focusing on the broad effects of digital transformation.

Program Overview

CAIS provides fellows the freedom to step away from their regular duties, offering an ideal environment for innovative research and exchange. The fellowship allows researchers to focus on projects related to the opportunities and challenges posed by digitalisation, encouraging both academic exploration and practical solutions. Fellows benefit from rent-free apartments, individual offices, and a vibrant academic setting.

Fellowships are available for either three or 6 months, with six-month fellowships typically starting in April 2025. For three-month fellowships, start dates are more flexible, with options in October, January, April, or July. The program can accommodate exceptions to these start dates upon consultation with CAIS.

Scholarship Value and Benefits

CAIS fellowships are highly supportive, providing the following benefits:

  • Fellows on sabbatical leave with a full salary receive an additional grant of €600 per month.
  • Fellows with no regular income receive a grant of €2,000 per month.
  • Fellows earning below €1,400 will have their income supplemented up to €2,000 per month.
  • An extra €100 per month is provided for each child under 18.
  • Rent-free, fully furnished two-room apartments suitable for families are provided. Larger apartments are available for fellows with more than one child.
  • Travel expenses for one round trip to Bochum or daily commute costs are covered.
  • Additional financial support for research expenses is available, and fellows can apply for grants to invite Visiting Fellows or experts for workshops and lectures.

These generous terms ensure fellows can fully focus on their work without financial concerns.

Applicants are required to submit a proposal outlining their project, personal data, and funding requests via the CAIS website (daad.de/go/en/stipa10000622). Supporting documents include a CV (maximum 2 pages) and one relevant publication, if applicable.
