The Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC) has announced the German WISER Scholarships for 2025, targeting female researchers eager to make a significant mark in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
This initiative, titled “Women Involvement in Science and Engineering Research (WISER),” is designed to bridge the gender gap in STEM by providing women researchers in India and Germany with vital resources and collaborative opportunities to support their professional growth.
About the WISER Program
The WISER program, established through collaboration between India’s Department of Science & Technology (DST) and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), aims to bolster women’s participation in scientific research.
With a focus on promoting sustainable collaboration between India and Germany, this scholarship supports women researchers in joining existing Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D&I) projects without needing to apply for new grants in either country. The goal is to retain talented women in STEM fields and create robust international research partnerships.
Key Benefits and Financial Support
Recipients of the WISER scholarship are eligible for a range of benefits designed to ease their research journey:
- Project Funding: The program offers up to ₹39 lakhs (or €48,000) for three years to support basic project needs, including research staff (for Indian awardees), consumables, and contingencies.
- Research Stay: Each awardee can visit their host country (India or Germany) once a year for up to a month. This includes a round-trip airfare, visa fees, medical insurance, and a per diem of €2300/month.
- Project Expenses:
- For Indian Awardees: Project funding includes travel and insurance (around ₹1 lakh), and annual project support up to ₹12 lakhs.
- For German Awardees: Travel costs, including visa and insurance, amount to approximately €1500, with annual project support up to €14,500.
Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is open to women who hold a regular or long-term research position in academic institutions, research institutes, or industry sectors in India or Germany. Although there is no age limit, early- and mid-career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.
Application and Deadlines
Applications are accepted year-round, with a significant cut-off date for the next round being February 28, 2025. Applicants should ensure they have acceptance from the host team within the project they are joining.
