Portugal Visas and Residence Permits Validity Extended Until June 30, 2025

In a major relief for foreign nationals, Portugal has officially extended the validity of expired visas and residence permits until June 30, 2025, allowing holders to remain in, exit, and re-enter the country without legal concerns.

In an announcement reinforcing its commitment to foreign residents and visa holders, the Portuguese government has declared that all documents related to legal stay in the country, which expired on or after February 22, 2020, will remain valid until mid-2025. This measure ensures that affected individuals can continue their lives in Portugal without disruption, as the extended documents will be recognized by Portuguese public authorities for all legal purposes.

Who Benefits from This Extension?

This new regulation applies to a wide range of following visa/residence permit holders, including but not limited to:

    • Residence Permits (AR), including CPLP Residence Permits
    • EU Nationals Registration Certificates
    • EU Nationals and Their Family Members’ Residence Cards
    • Short-stay, temporary stay, and residence visas
    • Other relevant legal stay documents.

Which Institutions Recognize These Documents?

Under the new directive, all public and private entities in Portugal must accept these validity extended Portuguese visa documents whereas these institutions include:

    • Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP)
    • Social Security Institute (ISS)
    • Portuguese Tax Authority (AT)
    • National Health Service (SNS)
    • Local Authorities (City and Parish Councils)
    • Banks
    • Employers.

Freedom to Stay, Exit, and Re-enter Portugal

This regulation grants all affected foreign nationals the right to remain in Portugal legally. Furthermore, they can exit and return to Portugal using these extended documents as proof of their legal status. This ruling significantly alleviates the uncertainties many visa holders and foreign residents have faced due to pandemic-related backlogs and administrative delays.

Schengen Travel Limitations Still Apply

While the extension ensures security within Portugal, authorities have clarified that the ruling is strictly valid within the national territory. Any travel to or movement within other Schengen states remains subject to the standard Schengen Borders Code, meaning individuals must comply with existing entry and visa regulations when crossing into other EU countries.
