United Kingdom (UK) Starting ETA Finally on April 2, 2025
The past three months have been a whirlwind of speculation, hiccups, and hurried updates surrounding the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. From initial glitches to shifting timelines, travelers have been holding their breath. But now, after navigating a sea of challenges, the UK government has announced that the ETA system is officially launching on April 2, 2025.
So, if you’re dreaming of exploring London’s historic streets, hiking through the Scottish Highlands, or soaking up the culture of vibrant UK cities, it’s time to get up to speed on this crucial new travel requirement. Let’s break down what you need to know, now that the dust has settled and the ETA is ready for prime time.
Who Needs an ETA?
From April 2, 2025, the ETA requirement will apply to European travelers who currently do not require a visa for short stays. Eligible non-European visitors already need an ETA to travel to the UK.
The ETA is not a visa but serves as a digital permission to travel. It does not guarantee entry into the UK, as border officials will still assess travelers upon arrival.
UK-ETA Application Procedure
Getting your UK ETA is designed to be a quick, digital process. You can apply either through the official “UK ETA app,” available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store, or directly via the GOV.UK website if you don’t have smartphone access.
While most app users receive an almost instant decision, it’s wise to allow up to three working days in case further checks are needed. To complete your application, you’ll need to pay a £10 fee (with a future increase to £16 anticipated), provide your passport and contact information, upload a digital photo, and answer some security-related questions. Crucially, ensure you travel using the same passport you used for your ETA application.
ETA Validity and Multiple Entry: An ETA allows multiple trips to the UK over a period of two (02) years or until the applicant’s passport expires—whichever comes first. Each stay can be up to six (06) months at a time.
How ETAs Improve UK Border Security: The ETA system enhances border security by gathering essential biographic, biometric, and security data before travelers arrive in the UK. This prevents individuals deemed a security risk from traveling to the country.
What Happens if an ETA Application is Refused?
- Applicants will be informed of the reason for refusal and can reapply.
- No appeals process is available for ETA refusals.
- If denied an ETA, travelers must apply for a UK visa to seek entry.
ETA Requirements for Northern Ireland Travelers
- British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA.
- Non-Irish residents of Ireland who do not require a visa to visit the UK do not need an ETA when traveling within the Common Travel Area (CTA) but must have proof of residence.
- However, if traveling from outside the CTA, an ETA is required before departure.
ETA April 2, 2025 Update for Transit Passengers
- Passengers transiting airside (not crossing through UK border control) are temporarily exempt from ETA requirements.
- Those passing through UK border control will still need an ETA.
- The government will keep this exemption under review.
