Abdus Salam International Centre Earth System Physics Postdoctoral Fellowship 2025
Are you an early-career scientist with a burning passion for climate dynamics or disease modelling? Get ready to pack your bags and change the world—because the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is calling on brilliant minds from every corner of the globe to apply for its prestigious Earth System Physics (ESP) Postdoctoral Fellowship 2025!
This is more than just a postdoc—it’s your gateway to world-class, cross-continental collaboration, real-world impact, and cutting-edge science at the intersection of climate and global health.
About ICTP Earth Systems Fellowship Program
Starting in July 2025 (or as soon as possible after), two (02) postdoctoral researchers will join ICTP’s dynamic Earth System Physics (ESP) section for a 2-year appointment, renewable for a third year based on performance.
What’s more thrilling? This opportunity is embedded in the groundbreaking ACCLIMATISE project, funded by the UK’s Wellcome Trust, and led by Dr. Adrian Tompkins. ACCLIMATISE brings together a powerful consortium of 8 top-tier institutions from Africa, Europe, and the USA, working hand-in-hand with health ministries in Senegal, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
This isn’t theory in a vacuum—it’s science with boots on the ground, monitoring networks in Senegal, and operational applications that will redefine how climate and health interventions are implemented in Africa.
Two High-Impact Research Tracks
Position 1: African Monsoon Variability: Explore the mechanics behind the variability and long-term trends of the African Monsoon System. You’ll dive into:
-
- Conceptual climate models
- High-res cloud-permitting simulations
- CMIP datasets
- Cutting-edge simulations from Destination Earth and NextGEMS
Who should apply? Experts in Atmospheric Physics and Climate Science, especially those focused on tropical climates.
Position 2: Climate-Sensitive Malaria Modelling: Help revolutionize ICTP’s VECTRI malaria model by incorporating:
-
- Human population mobility
- Climate change impacts on malaria risk
- Efficacy of vector control interventions
You’ll also help build the first-ever model coupling climate, mobility, and interventions using ICTP’s agent-based mobility model.
Who should apply? Scientists with backgrounds in atmospheric sciences, disease modeling, epidemiology, or AI.
