Digital Heritage Mapping Scholarship 2025 at the Humanities Institute

Are you passionate about history, digital technology, and preserving cultural heritage? The Digital Heritage Mapping (DHM) organization—sponsored by The Humanities Institute and the Center for Jewish Studies at UCSC—is now accepting applications for its 2025 Undergraduate Summer Fellowship, offering students a unique opportunity to explore global Jewish history from a virtual vantage point.

️Program Description

This fellowship places selected undergraduate students on the front lines of DHM’s flagship project, Diarna: The Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life, and its expanded initiative, Beitenu – The Atlas of Jewish Life. Participants will join a remote, international, interfaith team documenting Jewish heritage across 66 countries using digital mapping, multimedia archives, and field-based research methods. Assignments may include historical research, archival media sourcing, translation, educational content development, and digital content maintenance. Past fellows have contributed to global exhibitions and scholarly conferences.

Funding Benefits

  • Each selected fellow will receive a $5,500 fellowship stipend, administered by The Humanities Institute at UCSC.
  • The entire fellowship is remote, giving participants flexibility to work from anywhere.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to undergraduate students of all majors.
  • Applicants should be self-motivated, curious, and able to work independently.
  • While not required, knowledge of relevant languages besides English is a plus.
  • Ideal candidates are those who appreciate the urgency of preserving cultural heritage and are eager to deliver results.
