Japan eVISA System Officially Goes Live in June 2025
The Land of the Rising Sun just flipped the switch on its long-awaited JAPAN eVISA system, revolutionizing how travelers from around the world enter the country for short-term tourism.
Whether you’re craving cherry blossoms, neon-lit cities, historic temples, or steaming ramen bowls, getting your visa to Japan is now just a few clicks away — no more paper trails, consulate visits, or sticker stamps required (well, for most).
What Is the JAPAN eVISA?
The JAPAN eVISA is a single-entry electronic visa designed for tourism purposes for a stay of up to 90 days. Applicants can now apply, pay, and receive their visas entirely online — and display a digital “Visa Issuance Notice” at the airport upon departure.
⚠️ Important: No PDFs, screenshots, or printed copies allowed — you must show the digital visa notice directly on your internet-connected device at check-in.
Who Can Apply for the JAPAN eVISA?
As of now, travelers residing in the following countries/regions are eligible to apply directly online:
- Cambodia
- Brazil
- Saudi Arabia
- Australia
- Canada
- South Africa
- United Kingdom
- Taiwan
- Singapore
- United States of America
Note: If you are exempt from short-term visas already, you don’t need to apply.
Special Procedures for Other Countries
Some travelers will need to apply through designated travel agencies or via Japanese embassies/consulates:
- China: Chinese nationals residing in China apply via accredited agencies; stay up to 15 or 30 days.
- Vietnam: Nationals must apply as part of a designated package tour; stay duration is 15 days.
- Residents in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Mongolia, South Korea (except Jeju), and UAE can apply online unless exempt.
️ Travelers must be arriving by air or by international passenger ferries (from Busan or Shanghai only).
eVISA Only for Tourism – What About Long-Term or Other Purposes?
If you’re heading to Japan for:
- Work
- Study
- Long-term residence
- Family reunification
You’ll still need to go through the traditional visa process at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country. These visas will continue to be issued as physical stickers in your passport.
