About the Camargo Foundation

Founded in 1971 by American artist and philanthropist Jerome Hill, the Camargo Foundation supports international artists, scholars, and cultural thinkers through long-term residencies designed to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, research, and creation. Located on the Mediterranean coastline, the Foundation’s serene campus is the perfect setting for focused, cross-cultural inquiry and creative experimentation.

What is the Camargo Fellowship?

The Camargo Fellowship provides 10-week fully funded residencies to 14 fellows per year7 artists and 7 scholars/thinkers. The program is uniquely known for blending personal solitude with group interactions that spark fresh intellectual and artistic synergies. Since its inception, over 1,500 fellows have benefited from this immersive experience.


Who Can Apply?

The Fellowship welcomes diverse applicants worldwide in three main categories:

1# Scholars: For researchers in the arts and humanities focusing on French, Francophone, or Mediterranean cultures. PhD holders or candidates in the final dissertation phase are eligible.

2# Thinkers: Curators, critics, journalists, urban planners, or independent intellectuals working on ideas relevant to culture, society, and equitable transitions.

3# Artists: Creative professionals with at least five (05) years of active practice, working in:

    • Visual Arts
    • Film/Video/Digital Media
    • Theater/Performance
    • Writing and Playwriting
    • Composition/Sound Art
    • Multidisciplinary Arts.

Note: Artists must be engaged in research-based or critically reflective projects.

Additional Notes:

    • Collaborative Projects: Up to three members allowed per team.
    • Translation Projects: Welcome under relevant categories.
    • Former Fellows: May reapply after a 3-year gap.

Purpose of the Residency

The Fellowship is not just a retreat; it’s a platform for exploration and creation. Residents are expected to:

    • Work on a proposed project or research area.
    • Lead a Resident Session to engage others in their process.
    • Optionally showcase work in the Open Studio event.
    • Participate in cross-disciplinary dialogue and community life.

Residency Periods & Financial Benefits

Residencies last 10 weeks, with two possible cohorts:

  • Fall 2025: September 10 – November 19
  • Spring 2026: February 24 – May 5

Benefits include:

    • A stipend of €350/week (total €3,500)
    • Travel support (basic coach class airfare)
    • Private apartment accommodation in Cassis
    • Access to a library, artist/composer studios, and performance spaces.

Note: The campus is ideal for desk-based work. The Foundation does not provide technical equipment or art supplies.


Bring Your Family Too!

Spouses, adult partners, and minor children (6+ years) are welcome. Children must be enrolled in school or structured weekday activities. Only listed family members can stay on campus. Pets (except service animals) are not allowed.
