The Department of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) at the University of Maryland (UMD) has officially opened applications for the highly competitive UL FSRI Fellowships, offering full support for two Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) starting Spring 2026.
Funding Package
Each selected Fellow will receive a comprehensive funding package that includes:
- Standard tuition credits (up to 25)
- Health benefits
- Generous stipend of approximately $42,000 per year
- Duration: Up to 24 months of support

Who Can Apply – Eligibility Criteria
- Degree Program: Applicants must be incoming MS students in Fire Protection Engineering at UMD
- Nationality: Open to both domestic and international students
- Academic Excellence: Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis
- Application Materials Required:
- One-page statement of purpose (emphasizing interest in FPE and fire research)
- Résumé
- Transcripts (official or unofficial)
- Separate graduate application to the FPE MS program
While it is not necessary to propose a research project during the application, selected fellows will collaborate with UL FSRI engineers and FPE faculty advisors to define their research focus.

The last date to apply for the UL FSRI Fellowships is Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Applicants must also submit a separate application to the FPE MS program at UMD. Fellowship award decisions will be announced in late September 2025.
