Loeb Classical Library Foundation Fellowships 2026

The Loeb Classical Library Foundation (LCLF) has officially announced that applications for its 2026–27 fellowship cycle will open on August 11, 2025, offering generous funding opportunities for scholars in the field of classical studies. The program continues its mission—established by James Loeb himself—to support outstanding research in archaeology, Greek, and Latin literature without distinction as to sex, race, nationality, color, or creed.

Funding Package

Selected fellows will receive awards ranging from $1,000 to $40,000. The funding is highly flexible and can be used for a variety of research and academic purposes, including:

  • Publication subventions
  • Enhancement of sabbaticals
  • Travel to libraries, archives, or collections
  • Reasonable payment for student research assistants
  • Conferences, dramatic productions, or excavation expenses
  • Purchase of research materials

In some cases, fellowship requests may be partially funded, and under exceptional circumstances, awards can be extended or renewed with a new application.

Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to qualified scholars, including faculty emeriti, working in the field of classical studies.

  • For salary replacement: Applicants must have faculty status at a college or university at the time of application and throughout the fellowship period. They must not have had a fully funded sabbatical or research fellowship in the three (03) years prior to the award year.
  • For project-based funding (e.g., archaeological excavations, travel, conferences): Applicants must submit a complete project budget, list other funding sources, and—if part of a larger project—include a recommendation letter from the project director.
  • Applicants may not receive more than three (03) consecutive fellowships or more than three (03) in a five-year period.
