MA in Development Management (MADM) Scholarship 2026 at Ruhr University Bochum
The Institute of Development Research and Development Policy at Ruhr University Bochum is inviting applications from global candidates for its prestigious Master in Development Management (MADM) programme, beginning in September 2026.
Since its launch in 2000, the programme has been a part of the DAAD-funded Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS), preparing professionals for high-level roles in planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating development programmes and projects worldwide.
About the Programme
The MADM is a 3-semester, full-time degree taught in English, offering an interdisciplinary blend of social science and economics theories, empirical research methods, and project cycle management. Students benefit from:
- Hands-on learning through research projects, a simulation game, and internships.
- Field research opportunities to gather data for their master’s thesis.
- Intercultural training and optional skill-enhancement seminars.
- German language classes, with a mandatory preparatory course for DAAD EPOS scholarship recipients starting in July 2026.
Programme Structure
- First Semester – Coursework on development theories and empirical research methods, plus research project planning. Includes an optional 2-month internship.
- Second Semester – Focus on programme and project planning, management, and evaluation, along with field research preparation.
- Third Semester – Thesis writing based on field research, supported by relevant labour market and academic skills training.
Who Can Apply?
The programme is open to applicants from all over the world with:
- A bachelor’s degree in political science, social science, law, economics, geography, or related fields.
- Practical or academic experience in development management.
- For DAAD EPOS scholarship applicants: at least two years of relevant work experience after graduation and preferably a re-employment guarantee from the employer.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79-80 or IELTS Band 6.0.

Applicants must submit a motivation letter, CV (Europass format), academic transcripts, school leaving certificate, language certificates, proof of work experience, recommendation letters, and for DAAD-EPOS candidates, additional DAAD-specific forms.
