Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Doctoral Scholarship 2026 Open
The Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Scholarship Foundation (ELES), supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), has announced its call for applications for doctoral scholarships. This program is a German scholarship opportunity designed to foster academic excellence among talented Jewish doctoral candidates in all disciplines (except medicine) as well as non-Jewish candidates whose research projects focus on Jewish studies.
Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich PhD Scholarship Package
The doctoral scholarship offers a comprehensive package of support, including:
- Financial assistance covering the standard three-year duration of doctoral study, with a possible six-month extension in special cases.
- Non-material support such as mentorship, networking opportunities, and participation in academic and social activities within ELES.
- Religious and personal guidance, helping scholars advance not only in their academic careers but also in their personal development.
- A strong alumni network that ensures long-term connection and collaboration beyond the scholarship period.
Eligibility Criteria
The program is aimed at:
- Jewish doctoral candidates pursuing any discipline at a state or state-recognized university in Germany (or, for German citizens, within the EU or Switzerland).
- Non-Jewish doctoral candidates whose dissertation projects specifically focus on Jewish topics.
- Applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic merit, an innovative dissertation project capable of completion within three years, and a proven track record of social commitment — whether in Jewish communities, youth work, student organizations, or broader civic engagement.
- Admission to a recognized doctoral program is required at the time of application. In rare justified cases, funding at non-European universities is also possible.
Application Timeline
Doctoral scholarships are awarded twice each year. The deadlines are as follows:
-
September 30, 2025 – for admission beginning April 1, 2026.
Applicants are encouraged to submit their materials early, as the competition is rigorous and requires a detailed, academically ambitious dissertation proposal.
