University of Twente Scholarships 2027 With Up to €22,000 Funding

The University of Twente Scholarship 2027 is now one of the key Netherlands funding opportunities for high-achieving non-EU/EEA students planning to begin a Master’s degree in September 2027 — but applicants should read the fine print before celebrating.

This scholarship can provide between €3,000 and €22,000 for one year, making it a serious financial support route for international students targeting the University of Twente in the Netherlands. However, this is not a full scholarship, and it does not automatically erase tuition, rent, visa costs, or living expenses. The award is meant as a contribution toward study-related costs, and selected students decide how to use the money.

That makes the University Twente Scholarship, widely known as UTS, a valuable but highly selective opportunity: strong enough to reduce the financial burden, but not designed to carry an applicant through the entire cost of studying in the Netherlands.

The Real Hook: Up to €22,000, But Only for Serious MSc Applicants

The UTS is aimed at excellent students from outside the EU/EEA who are applying for an eligible Master’s programme at the University of Twente for the 2027/2028 academic year.

The scholarship value ranges from €3,000 to €22,000 for one academic year. For many international applicants, that amount can make the difference between abandoning a Dutch MSc plan and making it financially possible. But the university is clear: no tuition fee or other cost is paid directly on the student’s behalf.

In simple terms, the award helps — but it does not replace the need for a complete financial plan.

Applicants should therefore check tuition fees, living costs in the Netherlands, insurance, visa-related costs, travel expenses, and personal maintenance funds before applying. Students who cannot cover the remaining costs are directly advised not to apply for UTS.

Two-Year Master’s Students Can Get More — But Must Earn It

Students applying for a two-year Master’s programme may be able to receive a second UTS award for the second year, equal to the amount awarded in the first year.

But this continuation is not automatic. To receive the second-year scholarship, students must meet academic progress requirements during the first year. By the end of the third quartile of the first year, they must have:

• An average grade of 7 out of 10
• At least 50% of European Credits

This makes UTS different from simple one-time entry funding. It rewards strong admission profiles first, and then expects scholarship holders to prove that they can perform after arrival.

Extra Funding Angle: Kipaji Scholarship May Be Added

There is also a possible additional scholarship route for UTS recipients through the Kipaji Scholarship, but this applies only to programmes starting in September 2027.

Applicants interested in Kipaji funding must first apply for the University of Twente Scholarship. If they meet the Kipaji conditions, they are advised to mention their interest in the scholarship motivation section of the UTS application.

This is important because Kipaji is not a separate shortcut around UTS. It is connected to the UTS route and has additional requirements that applicants must review carefully.

Degree Level and Subject Coverage

The University of Twente Scholarship 2027 is available for eligible Master’s degree programmes at the University of Twente.

It is not available for undergraduate degrees, short courses, pre-Master programmes, or every faculty. One major exclusion is that UTS does not apply to Master’s programmes offered by the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC).

Applicants should confirm that their chosen MSc programme is eligible before preparing the scholarship application. This is especially important because the scholarship process begins only after a student has applied for admission and obtained a student number.

Eligibility Check: Who Has a Real Chance?

The University of Twente Scholarship is not built for average applications. The university describes it as a scholarship for excellent students, generally those among the best 5% to 10% of their graduating class at their home university.

Applicants should consider applying if they meet the following conditions:

• They are from a non-EU/EEA country
• They are applying for an eligible Master’s programme at the University of Twente
• Their programme starts in September 2027
• They have received a provisional or full admission letter from UT
• They have a University of Twente student number
• They have not graduated from a UT undergraduate or graduate programme
• They are not current University of Twente students
• They are not eligible for a Dutch study loan
• They meet Dutch entry visa conditions, if applicable
• They meet the English language requirement: Academic IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90
• They also meet the speaking requirement: IELTS speaking 6.0 or TOEFL iBT speaking 20
• Their academic profile places them among the strongest students in their graduating class

This is where many applicants need to be honest with themselves. UTS is competitive, and the university openly signals that self-knowledge matters. A weak academic record, unclear motivation, or rushed admission application will not be enough.

Who Should Not Apply?

This scholarship is not available to every international student. Applicants should not apply for UTS if they fall into any of the following categories:

• Dutch students
• EU/EEA students
• Current University of Twente students
• Students applying for a pre-Master programme
• Students applying for Master’s programmes at the ITC Faculty
• Students who have already graduated from a UT undergraduate or graduate programme
• Students eligible for the Dutch statutory tuition fee
• Students who cannot cover the remaining study and living costs after the scholarship

There is also a key warning for non-EU/EEA students with a Dutch residence permit. If that residence status makes the student eligible for the statutory tuition fee, they are not eligible for UTS. If a student receives UTS and later becomes eligible for the statutory fee during studies, they must inform the UT Scholarship Coordinator. In that case, the scholarship will be cancelled and payments will stop.

Why Admission Timing Can Make or Break Your Scholarship Chance?

The most important practical detail is this: applicants cannot apply for UTS first.

They must first apply for a University of Twente Master’s programme. After applying for the MSc programme and receiving a conditional or provisional admission letter, they can apply for the scholarship using their student number.

The university also notes that after completing the admission application, it may take up to 8 weeks to receive the result. This means applicants who wait until close to the scholarship deadline may run out of time before they even become eligible to submit the UTS application.

For serious candidates, the best strategy is to start the Master’s admission process early, secure the student number, and then prepare the scholarship application before the final rush.
