Art McDonald Fellowship 2025 Available

If you’re an early-career researcher in the natural sciences or engineering with the ambition to push boundaries and inspire the next generation, here’s your chance to shine! The NSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowship is one of Canada’s most prestigious recognitions for academic researchers, and applications are now open through Queen’s University.


What You Get – The Award Package

Selected McDonald Fellows will enjoy an exceptional support package designed to fuel groundbreaking research. The fellowship offers:

  • $250,000 research grant over two years.
  • Relief from teaching and administrative duties, giving you dedicated time to advance your research.
  • Up to $90,000 per year in salary contribution to your host institution, ensuring robust institutional support.

With this freedom and funding, fellows can elevate their projects, expand their networks, and strengthen their leadership in the global research community.


Who Can Apply – Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Hold an independent academic position for 10 years or less.
  • Currently hold a grant from NSERC.
  • Meet the eligibility window (adjusted for eligible delays such as parental leave, bereavement, illness, or COVID-19 disruptions).

Importantly, NSERC and Queen’s University are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Applications from Indigenous Peoples, women, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and individuals of diverse gender identities and expressions are strongly encouraged.


Key Dates and Timeline

Here’s what applicants need to know about the process and deadlines:

  • Expression of Interest (EOI) Deadline: September 12, 2025
    Submit a simple EOI to Mona Rahman (Research Awards Officer), including your interest in self-nomination and a copy of your NSERC Personal Data Form (Form 100).

  • Internal Selection Notification: By October 3, 2025
    Queen’s University will review EOIs and certify up to six nominees to proceed.

  • Full Nomination Package – Internal Deadline: November 7, 2025
    Certified candidates prepare their full package, including a nomination letter, research directions, and required forms.

  • NSERC Submission Deadline: December 14, 2025
    Final packages must be submitted via the ICSP Secure Submission Site.

  • Fellowship Start Date: Between April 2026 and March 2027 (on the first day of the month).
