The Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), one of Germany’s Universities of Excellence, has opened applications for a three-year, part-time (67.5%) research/doctoral position (E13 TV-L) at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Geosciences, Chair of Geodetic Earth System Research.
The role is tied to the DFG Priority Programme “Antarktisforschung” and the project “Resolving processes of Antarctic Ice Sheet change through innovations in satellite altimetry” (RAISA). The position is designed for candidates aiming to pursue a PhD while contributing to cutting-edge polar and geodetic research with strong international collaboration, including partners such as the Alfred Wegener Institute.

What the Project Covers?
RAISA targets a more precise understanding of Antarctic Ice Sheet change by advancing how satellite altimetry is used and combined with complementary Earth observation techniques.
Core research goals
- Innovate and refine satellite altimetry analysis over the Antarctic Ice Sheet.
- Interpret surface elevation changes together with numerical modeling of surface mass balance, firn compaction, and ice-flow dynamics.
- Identify and quantify change processes and ice-mass balance.
- Develop stochastic uncertainty characterizations for mass-balance estimates derived from altimetry.
- Conduct cross-validation and fusion with complementary methods such as satellite gravimetry.
- Publish and present findings in journals and at scientific conferences.
Who Should Apply?
Minimum requirements

- A completed Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Geodesy or a closely related field (Geophysics, Geoinformatics, Physics, Mathematics).
- Strong analytical skills and very good programming/scripting abilities.
- Readiness for interdisciplinary, international collaboration; excellent teamwork and communication.
- English proficiency at B2–C1 (GER). German is an advantage but not mandatory.
Desirable experience

- Hands-on familiarity with space-geodetic techniques (especially satellite altimetry).
- Knowledge of parameter estimation and stochastic modeling.
- Background in ice-sheet processes and cryosphere research.
