Wellington 110 PhD Scholarships 2026 Open at Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand
Victoria University of Wellington, one of New Zealand’s top-ranked research universities, is actively recruiting doctoral candidates from around the world through its Wellington Doctoral Scholarship. The university awards approximately 110 of these doctoral scholarships each year across every discipline it offers, from science and engineering to law, music, and the humanities.
Unlike many fully funded PhD programs that restrict eligibility by nationality or field, this one is open to graduates of any university, in any country, pursuing any area of doctoral research. With three application rounds per year and a funding package that covers both living costs and tuition, it remains one of the more accessible and generous doctoral funding options in the Asia-Pacific region.
What the Money Actually Looks Like?
The Wellington Doctoral Scholarship provides a comprehensive funding package designed to let candidates focus entirely on their research for up to three years.
- Annual stipend of NZD 32,000 paid directly to the recipient’s New Zealand bank account in monthly installments
- Full domestic tuition fees covered for the entire scholarship tenure, paid by the scholarship fund straight to the university’s fees office
- Tenure of up to three years, though candidates who enrolled more than six months before receiving the offer may have their scholarship period shortened at the committee’s discretion
- The scholarship can be held alongside other awards, but if combined funding exceeds one-third of the stipend value, the committee may reduce the Wellington Doctoral Scholarship amount accordingly
- Stipend payments stop no more than one month after thesis submission if the candidate finishes before the three-year term ends.
Who Can Actually Apply?
Eligibility is broad by design, but the academic bar is high. Here is what the university expects from candidates before their application will be considered.
- Open to graduates of any university worldwide, whether based in New Zealand or internationally
- Applicants must be eligible, or expect to become eligible within three months, to register as a doctoral candidate at Victoria University of Wellington
- A completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with academic distinction equivalent to First Class Honours at a New Zealand university is the normal baseline expectation
- Candidates already enrolled in a PhD at the university can apply, though the scholarship term may be shortened
- Current academic staff at Victoria University of Wellington or any other university are not eligible to hold the scholarship
- Recipients must enroll full-time and commit entirely to their research program, though domestic students with compelling personal circumstances may request part-time status on a pro-rated basis
- Paid employment is capped at 600 hours per calendar year and requires written approval from both the supervisor and the Head of School.
