Umeå University is now accepting applications for three multidisciplinary postdoctoral scholarships under the IceLab Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Program, a research track designed for early-career scientists who can connect computation, biology, mathematics, ecology, physics, data science, medicine and systems thinking.

2# RNA Polymerase Allocation Under Stress

This project studies how bacteria decide which genes to activate when they face stress, infection or antibiotic exposure. The work combines microbiology, biological physics, systems biology and computational modelling to understand hidden regulatory mechanisms linked to bacterial survival.

Applicants from computational biology, bioinformatics, physics, systems biology, mathematical modelling or data analysis backgrounds may be strong candidates.

3# Evolution of Adaptive Immunity

This project asks a fundamental biological question: why did adaptive immunity evolve, and under what conditions is such a costly defence system worth maintaining?

The selected researcher will use mathematical and computational models to study immune evolution, host-pathogen interaction, biological complexity and stress-response systems.

Suitable applicants may come from mathematics, physics, theoretical biology, evolutionary biology, immunology, computational biology or related disciplines.

4# Ecological Networks and Biodiversity Under Global Change

This project focuses on how plant communities survive through complex networks involving soil microbes, pollinators, herbivores and competitors. The research will use network science and ecological modelling to understand biodiversity loss and species coexistence under climate and environmental change.

Applicants with expertise in ecology, physics, computational science, applied mathematics, statistical modelling, network analysis, plant-soil interactions or community ecology should review this project carefully.

5# Stress, Resilience and Performance in Elite Female Athletes

This project uses a rare six-year dataset from Swedish elite cross-country skiers and biathletes to study how the human body adapts or fails under sustained stress.

The successful researcher will work with high-dimensional data involving molecular profiles, training load, psychology, physiology, diet and performance outcomes.

This project is especially relevant for applicants in statistics, data science, computational biology, machine learning, physics, mathematical statistics or other quantitative disciplines.

Who Should Apply?

This call is mainly for researchers who already hold a PhD or expect to meet doctoral degree requirements before the final scholarship decision.
