Chinese University of Hongkong Opens PHD Fellowships 2027 Under HKPFS Program
If you are planning a fully funded PhD in Hong Kong for 2027–28, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has opened its route to the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) with financial support worth over HK$1.81 million across the normal study period.
The application window runs from 1 September to 1 December 2026, but there is one important applicant trap: you must complete two separate application stages, not simply submit a CUHK PhD application.
What Can an HKPFS Scholar at CUHK Receive?
The funding package shown by CUHK is considerably broader than a basic PhD stipend.
Successful HKPFS awardees can receive:
- Stipend worth up to HK$1.38 million
- Tuition fee waiver worth up to HK$198,000
- Conference and research travel allowance up to HK$87,600
- Lodging award worth up to HK$100,000
- First-year hostel fee waiver
- Guaranteed on-campus accommodation in the first year, subject to completing the required procedures on time
These benefits apply within the relevant normative study period.
Who Should Apply?
This fellowship is aimed at outstanding PhD applicants from around the world who can demonstrate more than strong grades.
In addition to satisfying CUHK’s normal admission and English-language requirements, competitive applicants should demonstrate:

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
In other words, your application should show the selection panel why you could become an exceptional researcher, rather than presenting academic marks alone.
CUHK also hosts a very broad research environment spanning areas including biomedicine, artificial intelligence, robotics, sustainability, information technology, agriculture and Chinese society, so this is not a STEM-only fellowship.
How Do You Apply for HKPFS at CUHK?
This is where applicants need to be careful.
Step 1: Submit an initial HKPFS application through the Hong Kong Research Grants Council system. You will receive an HKPFS reference number in the format PF26-XXXXX.
Step 2: Complete your separate CUHK online PhD application and enter that HKPFS reference number.
Shortlisted applicants may then be invited to an interview. Final HKPFS results are expected from the RGC between March and April 2027.
What Happens If CUHK Nominates You but HKPFS Rejects You?
There is a useful safety net.
CUHK states that candidates it nominates for HKPFS who are not ultimately selected by the RGC will receive admission to the regular PhD programme with a postgraduate studentship. They may also qualify for the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship worth HK$80,000, paid in three instalments and subject to satisfactory academic performance.
That makes applying through CUHK particularly interesting because an unsuccessful HKPFS outcome does not necessarily mean losing your PhD funding opportunity altogether.
CUHK HKPFS 2027–28 Deadline
The application period for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme at CUHK runs from 1 September to 1 December 2026. Applicants should complete both the RGC and CUHK stages before the closing date rather than treating December 1 as the day to begin the process.
