What’s the Age Limit for Scholarship Applications Globally in 2027?

Can you still win a fully funded scholarship at 30, 35 or even 40? Yes—but your age can dramatically change which scholarships you should apply for in 2027.

There is no worldwide scholarship age limit. Instead, our review of major government and international scholarship programs found a surprisingly wide range: under 21 for some bachelor’s scholarships, around 30–35 for many master’s programs, 35–40 for PhD opportunities, and as high as 50 for selected research schemes.

Even more interestingly, some of the world’s biggest scholarships—including Chevening, Swedish Institute, Manaaki New Zealand and most Australia Awards routes—do not impose one universal upper-age ceiling at all.

So being 32 or 38 does not mean you are “too old for scholarships.” It means you need to stop applying randomly and start targeting programs whose age rules actually fit you.

Age Limits of Major Fully Funded Scholarships for 2027

Here is the applicant-friendly comparison. Where an official 2027 rule has already been published, we use it. Where the next call is still pending, the latest official criterion is shown and should be checked again when the 2027 application notice appears.

These are not interchangeable rules. A scholarship may calculate age on the closing date, on the date study begins, or through a precise date-of-birth cutoff.

Türkiye Scholarships: 21, 30, 35 and 50 Are the Numbers to Remember

Türkiye Scholarships has one of the clearest age ladders.

The official criteria currently require associate and bachelor’s applicants to be under 21, master’s applicants to be under 30, PhD candidates to be under 35, and Research Scholarship applicants to be under 50.

That creates a particularly important cutoff for master’s applicants. Someone aged 29 may qualify, while an otherwise excellent applicant who has crossed the permitted age threshold may no longer be eligible.

MEXT Japan 2027 Already Has an Exact Birth-Date Rule

Japan provides one of the best examples of why applicants should check the actual year-specific guidelines instead of relying on an article saying simply “maximum age 35.”

For the 2027 MEXT Research Scholarship, the official guidelines state that applicants must, in principle, have been born on or after April 2, 1992. Limited exceptions concern circumstances such as compulsory military service or disruption of educational opportunity in an applicant’s country—not ordinary personal or family circumstances.

Across the wider MEXT system, the official Study in Japan portal lists:

• Research students: under 35
• Teacher-training students: under 35
• Undergraduate students: under 25
• Japanese Studies students: 18–29
• Young Leaders’ Program: normally under 40.

In other words, there is no single “MEXT age limit.”

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship 2027–28: Maximum Age 35

This is an important addition for 2027 applicants.

Switzerland has already published information for the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–28, describing the research/PhD scholarship route as having a maximum age of 35.

The official eligibility information also uses a precise birth-date test: date of birth after December 31, 1991 for the relevant 2027–28 category.

So applicants approaching 35 should check their exact date of birth rather than simply assuming that being “35 years old” automatically makes them eligible or ineligible.

South Korea Gives Graduate Applicants More Time

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is considerably more flexible at postgraduate level.

South Korea’s official Study in Korea portal states that graduate applicants must generally be under 40 years old.

The undergraduate scholarship is much tighter. Recent official GKS guidance uses an under-25 age requirement.

That makes GKS particularly valuable for applicants in their mid-to-late 30s who may already have aged out of MEXT, Eiffel, Türkiye Scholarships or CAS-ANSO.

France Excellence Eiffel Stops Earlier

France’s Eiffel Excellence Scholarship is aimed at comparatively younger postgraduate candidates.

Campus France currently states that foreign applicants may be up to 29 years old for master’s funding and up to 35 for PhD funding.

A 31-year-old master’s applicant could therefore be too old for Eiffel but still fall comfortably within the age limits of CSC China or GKS Korea.

That is exactly why “Am I too old?” is the wrong question.

The better question is: Which scholarship still fits my age?

ADB-Japan Scholarship: 35 Is the Important Cutoff

The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) normally requires candidates to be no more than 35 years old at the time of application.

There is an exceptional waiver provision where the Government of Japan expressly endorses it, but ordinary applicants should plan around 35 rather than expecting an exception.

Schwarzman Scholars Has a Precise 2027 Rule

For the Schwarzman Scholars Class of 2027–28, there is no ambiguity.

Applicants must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years old on August 1, 2027.

Schwarzman even frames its current eligibility test around that exact enrollment date, meaning your birthday—not merely your birth year—can determine eligibility.

What About Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships?

Here comes the interesting part.

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships do not publish a maximum age limit.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old when signing their scholarship letter of offer, but the New Zealand Government says it prefers applicants who are under 40 years of age.

That word—prefers—matters.

Being 40+ is therefore not the same as automatically failing an eligibility requirement. Older applicants should not incorrectly reject themselves simply because they encounter the under-40 preference.

Does Australia Awards Have an Age Limit?

Australia Awards does not have one universal upper-age ceiling applying identically to every participating country.

The current Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook was updated in June 2026, and the general framework requires applicants to satisfy the program’s eligibility criteria, while participating-country requirements can add specific conditions.

The general minimum is 18 years, but country profiles need to be checked separately. This distinction is extremely important.

For example, Australia’s official Laos intake information imposes a country-specific requirement of being between 18 and 50 years old as of December 31, 2026.

So writing “Australia Awards age limit is 50” globally would be wrong. It can be 50 for one participating country while another country may apply different additional eligibility conditions.

Swedish Institute Scholarship: No General Maximum Age Found

Another famous scholarship applicants frequently ask about is the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals.

The current official eligibility criteria emphasize citizenship, admission to an eligible Swedish master’s program, tuition-fee status, work experience and leadership experience. They do not list a general maximum applicant age.

That makes SI particularly interesting for experienced professionals who are worried that their age automatically disqualifies them from fully funded master’s study.

What About Chevening?

Chevening belongs in the same strategic category. Unlike Türkiye Scholarships or Eiffel, Chevening does not impose a general upper-age ceiling. Its selection model instead places considerable weight on professional experience, leadership potential, networking ability and career objectives.

For an applicant in their mid-30s or 40s, that fundamentally changes the scholarship strategy: an age-capped youth-oriented award may no longer be realistic, while an experience-driven scholarship may actually suit the applicant better.

I’m 30 Years Old. Which Scholarships Should I Target?

At 30–34, you still have a very large scholarship market.

Depending on your degree level and other eligibility requirements, possibilities can include MEXT Research, CSC, GKS Graduate, Swiss Government Excellence, ADB-JSP, CAS-ANSO PhD, Eiffel PhD, Chevening, Swedish Institute, Manaaki and Australia Awards.

However, some youth-focused master’s opportunities will already begin disappearing.

What If I’m 35?

Thirty-five is probably the most important age crossroads in international scholarship funding.

Several major schemes cluster around this point: MEXT Research, Swiss Government Excellence, Eiffel PhD, ADB-JSP, Türkiye PhD and CAS-ANSO all have rules close to this range.

If you are 34 or approaching 35, delaying an application cycle can therefore make a real difference.

What If I’m 40 or Older?

Being 40 does not end your scholarship search.

Instead, your shortlist changes.

Some conventional government scholarships with fixed age caps will no longer work, but programs without a universal upper limit—including Chevening, Swedish Institute and potentially Australia Awards or Manaaki—become much more strategically important.

Türkiye’s Research Scholarship currently goes even further, listing an under-50 criterion.

Age should therefore determine where you apply, not whether you apply.

The 2027 Scholarship Age Rule Most Applicants Miss

Do not look only at a number such as “35.”

Look for the sentence explaining how 35 is calculated.

Scholarship providers generally use one of three systems:

Fixed age: “Applicant must be under 35.”

Age on a specific date: Schwarzman, for example, measures age on August 1 of the enrollment year.

Date-of-birth cutoff: MEXT 2027 requires research applicants, in principle, to have been born on or after April 2, 1992.

Two applicants born in the same calendar year can therefore receive different eligibility results.

So, What Is the Global Scholarship Age Limit for 2027?

There isn’t one—and that is actually good news.

The practical pattern looks more like this:

Under 25: You remain inside the age window of most major undergraduate government scholarships.

25–29: A particularly strong age range for fully funded master’s scholarships and leadership programs.

30–34: Many master’s and PhD scholarships remain available, although some younger applicant schemes begin closing.

35–39: Your options shift increasingly toward GKS, CSC, selected doctoral programs and scholarships without upper-age limits.

40+: Fixed-age government scholarships become fewer, but no-upper-age-limit and experience-focused programs remain important targets.

So if you are 31, 36 or 42 and have been wondering whether international scholarship funding has passed you by, do not use your age alone to reject yourself.

A 36-year-old may be too old for one scholarship, comfortably eligible for another, and applying to a third scholarship that does not care about upper age at all.

For the 2027 scholarship season, the smartest approach is therefore not to ask, “Am I too old for a fully funded scholarship?”

Ask instead:

“Which fully funded scholarships are still designed for someone my age?”

That small change in question can completely change your shortlist—and potentially your chances of studying abroad fully funded.
