Choosing Subjects/Concentrations at Harvard College for Admissions
Choosing school subjects for a future Harvard College application is not about assembling the most difficult-looking timetable. The stronger strategy is to build a broad academic foundation first, then gradually add depth in the subjects that support the student’s developing interests.
This distinction matters because Harvard College does not admit first-year students directly into individual concentrations, the university’s term for undergraduate majors. Students enter Harvard College without being locked into a particular field and normally declare their concentration later.
A school student therefore does not need to decide at 13 that they will definitely study Economics, Computer Science or Neuroscience. But by the later secondary-school years, their subject choices should begin to make academic sense.

These are preparation pathways, not hidden Harvard admission requirements.
A student interested in engineering should normally take strong mathematics and physics where available. Someone developing toward history or literature, however, does not need to force advanced STEM courses into the timetable simply because another Harvard applicant is taking them.
A Better Way to Choose Your Grade 9–12 Subjects
Applicants can use a simple three-stage check before finalizing subject choices.
1# Preserve academic breadth
Do not specialize so aggressively that fundamental areas of secondary education disappear too early. Strong preparation in writing, mathematics, sciences and humanities keeps academic options open.
2# Add depth where genuine strength develops
Once an academic direction becomes clearer, use later school years to increase difficulty in the subjects that support it.
- A student moving toward Engineering might progress further in Mathematics and Physics.
- A student developing toward Economics might strengthen Mathematics, Statistics and analytical writing.
- A prospective historian might pursue advanced History, languages and substantial research or writing.
3# Ask whether the transcript tells an understandable academic story
By Grade 11 or 12, an admissions reader should be able to look at the course choices and understand something about the student’s intellectual development.
That does not require every course and activity to match one proposed concentration and it means the choices should not look arbitrary.

Does Harvard Require Calculus?
No. Calculus is not a universal Harvard College admission requirement.
This is one of the areas where students can make poor subject decisions after reading admissions discussions online.
Applicants considering mathematics-heavy fields such as engineering, physics, computer science or statistics may benefit from calculus if their school offers it and they are academically ready.
But taking calculus merely to make a transcript look more prestigious is not the objective.

Should Students Specialize Early?
Not too early.
Grades 6–8 should primarily be used to establish broad academic foundations and explore interests.
By Grades 9–10, students can begin identifying areas in which they are willing to do more demanding work.

A future computer scientist may naturally have programming projects. A biology-oriented applicant might pursue scientific investigation. A student interested in Government might write about public policy or participate in debate.
But a serious musician does not need to abandon music because they intend to study Economics.
Sport, employment, family responsibilities, community work and creative interests can all reveal qualities that an academic transcript cannot.
The better question is not:
“Does this activity match my proposed concentration?”
It is:
“Have I pursued it seriously enough that it tells Harvard something meaningful about me?”
How Harvard Applicants Should Make Subject and Concentration Decisions?
Questions circulating among applicants on Reddit, Facebook groups and X often focus on whether a particular concentration, advanced course or school curriculum can improve Harvard admission chances. The useful way to evaluate these claims is to separate Harvard’s actual admissions structure from applicant speculation.
Do Not Choose a “Less Competitive” Concentration as an Admissions Strategy
Choosing an apparently less popular concentration is not a reliable way to make Harvard easier to enter.
Harvard College admits first-year students to the College rather than filling separate freshman admission quotas for Economics, Computer Science, History or other concentrations. The academic-interest question on an application therefore should not be treated like selecting an easier door into the university.
For an applicant, the better strategy is to indicate the field that genuinely reflects the academic direction already visible in the record.
If your transcript shows advanced mathematics, programming projects and computing competitions, listing Computer Science makes sense. If several years of writing, history coursework and research point toward History, that is equally coherent.
Applicant action: Choose the academic interest that can be explained naturally by your subjects, activities and intellectual development. Do not redesign your intended field around online claims about acceptance rates.
Your Intended Concentration Is a Direction, Not a Contract
You can enter Harvard interested in one subject and later choose another concentration (Ref).
This is particularly important for students in Grades 9–12 who worry that they must settle their future career before applying.
A student may apply with Economics as a current interest and later discover Computer Science, Statistics or Government after taking courses at Harvard. First-year students have time to explore before concentration declaration.
That flexibility does not mean the application should be academically random. Harvard is still evaluating the education and interests you have developed up to the point of application.
Applicant action: Present your present academic direction honestly. You do not need to predict exactly what you will want to study two years after arriving at university.
No AP Courses at Your School? Do Not Manufacture an American Curriculum
The absence of AP courses is not itself an admissions weakness when your school does not offer them. This matters particularly for international applicants following A Levels, IB, CBSE/ISC, HSSC/FSc or other national systems.
Harvard evaluates applicants in educational context. An A-Level student is not expected to collect AP courses merely because an American applicant has them.
The stronger question is:
Did you take an appropriately demanding programme from the options actually available to you?
For example, an applicant interested in Engineering who had access to advanced Mathematics and Physics but deliberately avoided both presents a different admissions issue from an applicant whose school simply did not offer advanced coursework.

Do Not Confuse “Most Rigorous Available” With “Take Everything”
Harvard-level preparation does not require loading every advanced subject your school offers onto one transcript.
Course rigor matters, but so does performance, coherence and genuine learning.
A future Economics applicant might reasonably prioritize strong Mathematics, Economics and analytical subjects. An engineering-oriented student would normally give greater weight to Mathematics and Physics. A humanities applicant may benefit more from advanced History, Literature and languages than from taking an unnecessary collection of science courses solely for appearance.
The wrong approach is to create a timetable so overloaded that grades deteriorate or the student has no capacity for deeper academic work.

Humanities Applicants Should Not Copy STEM Applicants’ Mathematics Plans
Academic rigor does not mean identical coursework for every Harvard candidate.
A prospective historian and prospective physicist may both be academically ambitious while taking significantly different advanced courses.
Students heading toward humanities or many social sciences should maintain a strong mathematical foundation, but they should not assume that the highest available calculus sequence is automatically necessary simply because engineering applicants are taking it.
Conversely, a student seriously interested in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Statistics or Computer Science should think carefully before avoiding advanced mathematics that was available and appropriate.
The relevant question is not:
“What is the hardest course anyone applying to Harvard might take?”
It is:
“What is the strongest academically appropriate programme for the direction I am developing?”
What If You Still Do Not Know What You Want to Study at Harvard?
That is not automatically a problem, particularly for younger students.
A Grade 8 or Grade 9 student deciding between biology, mathematics and economics should generally preserve enough breadth to continue exploring all three.
Even an older applicant can legitimately have overlapping interests.
The mistake is not uncertainty.
The mistake is using uncertainty as a reason to avoid rigorous preparation altogether.
Students who have not settled on one field should build the strongest broad curriculum available and use electives, projects and extracurricular work to test different interests.
Harvard’s undergraduate structure is designed to permit further academic exploration after enrollment.
The Subject-Choice Test Before You Finalize Your Courses
Before selecting courses for the next school year, ask:
- Is this one of the strongest programmes reasonably available to me?
- Does it preserve enough breadth for my current stage?
- Am I developing greater depth in the subjects where my abilities and interests are becoming strongest?
- Can I realistically perform well in this programme rather than merely survive it?
- Would these choices still make educational sense if Harvard were removed from the equation?
That final question is particularly useful.
The strongest preparation usually consists of courses that genuinely develop the student, not subjects selected only because somebody online labelled them “good for Harvard.”
The Applicant Rule to Remember
Harvard does not require a school student to arrive with a perfectly engineered specialization.
What becomes more important as Grades 9–12 progress is academic progression: broad foundations first, increasingly rigorous coursework next, and greater depth where genuine interests emerge.
So do not search for the least competitive concentration. Do not copy another applicant’s transcript. Do not take calculus merely for the label, and do not downgrade your curriculum because a supposedly easier route has appeared on social media.
Choose subjects that are challenging in your educational context, appropriate to the academic direction you are developing, and strong enough to prepare you for university-level work.
That is a much more defensible Harvard preparation strategy than trying to reverse-engineer an admissions loophole.
