How International Students Can Apply to Harvard College for 2027–2028 Entry: Step-by-Step Guide

Applying to Harvard College from outside the United States is less complicated than it first appears. International students do not use a separate admission system: they apply through essentially the same first-year process as students studying in the US.

The challenge is coordination. Your school curriculum, SAT or ACT, Common Application, essays, recommendations, transcripts and financial-aid documents all have to come together within the admission calendar.

For students targeting autumn 2027 or 2028 entry, the process is best handled one step at a time.

Step 1: Check Which Harvard Intake You Are Applying For

Students entering Harvard in autumn 2027 are already in the 2026–27 application cycle.

For them:

Restrictive Early Action: November 1, 2026
Regular Decision: January 1, 2027

Students aiming for Harvard college autumn 2028 are still in preparation mode. If Harvard retains its current timetable, their Common Application should open around August 2027, followed by an early deadline around November and Regular Decision around January 2028.

Those later dates are planning estimates until Harvard confirms the 2028 cycle.

Step 2: Continue Your Existing School Curriculum

You do not need an American high-school diploma to apply to Harvard.

International applicants can come from:

  • A Levels;
  • International Baccalaureate;
  • CBSE/ISC;
  • FSc/HSSC;
  • European national systems;
  • African and Middle Eastern curricula;
  • other recognized secondary-school qualifications.

Do not try to rebuild your education around AP courses simply because Harvard is American.

Your priority should be to complete a strong and appropriately rigorous programme within the education system available to you.

A-Level and IB students may also have predicted grades submitted where final examinations have not yet taken place.

Step 3: Complete the SAT or ACT

Harvard currently expects first-year applicants to submit the SAT or ACT in normal circumstances.

For 2027 applicants, testing should ideally be completed during 2026.

For 2028 applicants, 2027 provides a better testing window because there is time to take a first attempt, identify weaknesses and retake if necessary.

Students who genuinely cannot access the SAT or ACT because of testing availability, cost or similar circumstances may be able to use certain external qualifications such as A Levels, IB, AP or recognised national leaving examinations instead.

That is an accessibility exception—not a general test-optional route.

Step 4: Open Your Common Application

The Common Application is the main admission application.

For 2027 entry, the cycle opened on August 1, 2026.

You will complete information about:

  • yourself and your family;
  • School and academic history;
  • Extracurricular activities;
  • achievements;
  • Personal circumstances;
  • Common App essay.

You then add Harvard College and complete its additional questions and short responses. Do not wait until the deadline month to start writing. Essays usually improve through revision rather than speed.

Step 5: Ask Your School to Prepare Your Academic Documents

Your school plays an important part in the application.

Harvard normally requires:

  • Secondary-school transcript;
  • School Report;
  • counselor or school-official recommendation;
  • Later, a Midyear Report;
  • Final school results if admitted.

International applicants should speak to their school early, particularly if the counselor or principal is unfamiliar with US university applications. If your school uses a grading system unfamiliar to American universities, do not convert the grades yourself unless specifically instructed. The school should provide the academic record in its normal form and explain the grading system where necessary.

Step 6: Choose Two Teachers for Recommendations

Harvard requires two teacher recommendations from different academic subjects.

Do not simply choose the two teachers who awarded your highest marks.

A strong recommender should know enough about you to describe:

  • How you approach difficult work;
  • How you think;
  • how you participate in class;
  • Your academic development;
  • your character as a student.

Ask early enough that teachers have time to write something thoughtful rather than hurried.

Step 7: Decide Between Early Action and Regular Decision

For 2027 entry, applicants have two main routes.

Restrictive Early Action — November 1, 2026 :REA is non-binding, so admission does not force you to attend Harvard. However, it places restrictions on certain other early applications. Do not select it simply because the word “early” sounds advantageous.

Regular Decision — January 1, 2027: Regular Decision provides additional time for testing, academic results and application refinement. The better route is the one that allows you to submit your strongest complete application.

Step 8: Submit the Application Fee or Request a Waiver

Harvard’s current first-year application fee is $95 and the students who cannot reasonably afford it can request an application fee waiver.

International applicants should not avoid applying merely because the application fee itself creates financial difficulty.

Step 9: Check Your Harvard Applicant Portal

After submitting the Common Application, applicants receive access to Harvard’s Applicant Portal. Use it to check whether Harvard has received:

  • Your application;
  • School report;
  • Rrecommendations;
  • Testing information;
  • Other required documents.

This step is important. Submitting Common App does not automatically mean every supporting document has arrived.

Check the portal and resolve missing items early.

Step 10: Apply for Financial Aid at the Same Time

International students can apply for Harvard need-based financial aid.

Do not wait until admission results arrive before investigating affordability.

International aid applicants generally prepare the CSS Profile and supporting family financial documentation through IDOC.

Harvard evaluates financial need using information such as:

  • family income;
  • Assets;
  • Household circumstances;
  • Other relevant financial commitments.

Harvard’s institutional aid is need-based, not a merit scholarship awarded simply for obtaining a high SAT score. Applicants who face genuine problems paying the CSS Profile fee or processing payment from their country can investigate Harvard’s alternative financial-aid application procedure.

Step 11: Submit Midyear Results When Available

Harvard may request updated academic information during the final school year. For students following A Levels, IB or other systems, this may include predicted grades, midyear performance or equivalent school updates.

If your school system does not issue American-style semester grades, your school can report what is actually available rather than attempting to invent an equivalent record.

Step 12: Decision, Final Results and Enrollment

Restrictive Early Action applicants generally receive their decision around mid-December.

Regular Decision results are normally released by the end of March.

Students who are admitted and decide to enroll must then submit final academic credentials, including the final school report and examination results where applicable.

For international students, the next stage then moves from admissions to enrollment arrangements, immigration documentation and preparation for study in the United States.

Harvard 2027–2028 International Application Checklist

The entire process can be reduced to this sequence:

Complete your school curriculum → take SAT/ACT → open Common App → write essays → arrange transcript and school report → secure two teacher recommendations → choose REA or Regular Decision → submit application → check Applicant Portal → complete financial aid → send updated grades → wait for decision → submit final results if admitted.

For 2027 applicants, these steps are now happening in real time.

For 2028 applicants, the advantage is preparation time. Use it to strengthen academic performance, complete standardized testing and build teacher relationships before the application itself opens.

The most important point for international students is that Harvard does not expect you to become an American student before applying.

Your job is to excel within the educational system you actually attend, then present that record clearly through Harvard’s first-year application process.
