EUI Max Weber Fellowships 2027 Application Process Explained
A fellowship that admits fewer than 2% of applicants is not the place for a generic postdoctoral proposal.
The European University Institute (EUI) has opened applications for its Max Weber Fellowship 2027–2028, bringing around 65 early-career researchers to Florence, Italy, for one of Europe’s most selective postdoctoral programmes.
Applications are open worldwide, regardless of nationality, and successful fellows currently receive €2,500 per month, alongside health insurance and dedicated research funding.

This Is More Than a €30,000-a-Year Fellowship
The headline grant works out to roughly €30,000 over 12 months, before any additional eligible family support.
Fellows also receive health insurance and access to a €1,500 personal mission and research fund for activities connected to their academic work. Depending on the host academic unit, awards may last one or two years, while third-year support is reserved for exceptional cases.
There is also an unusual second-year possibility. Qualifying fellows may apply for a part-time assistant professor contract involving teaching and PhD mentoring. The EUI estimates net additional remuneration at around €850 per month on top of the fellowship grant.
Who Has the Strongest Profile?
The programme is designed for researchers who are within five years of completing their PhD. Applications are accepted worldwide, but EUI explicitly states that preference goes to researchers who have only recently completed their doctorate and have not previously held a postdoctoral fellowship.
This matters. Meeting the five-year rule makes someone eligible; it does not necessarily make them equally competitive with a newly graduated researcher building their first independent postdoctoral project.

A common postdoctoral mistake is effectively proposing “PhD Part II.”
The Max Weber Programme is built around developing researchers into independent academics. Fellows receive training in publishing, presenting research, university teaching, grant applications and academic job searches, alongside interdisciplinary engagement across the Institute.
A stronger application should therefore explain not only what the researcher wants to investigate, but what intellectual step becomes possible after the doctorate and why EUI is the right environment for that transition.
