Linköping University International Scholarship 2027: Prepare Your Application Before Funding Opens

A Swedish master’s looks exciting until you reach the tuition fee—and suddenly the scholarship becomes the most important part of your plan. But at Linköping University, waiting for the scholarship application to open can cost you the opportunity before you even reach the form. Your programme choice, ranking and admission documents must already be in place.

This Linköping University International Scholarship 2027 guide helps you prepare in the right order: choose a suitable master’s, build a complete admission file and get ready to act when scholarship applications open. Autumn 2027 admission applications begin on 16 October 2026. The scholarship dates are still unannounced, so now is the time to organise the work that cannot wait until scholarship season.

Why your first-choice programme matters at Linköping

You must rank a LiU master’s first and be admitted to that exact first choice in the first selection notification. Ranking another university first, or receiving a lower-choice LiU offer, does not meet the current rule.

Before clicking “submit,” ask yourself: would I choose this programme for its subjects, teaching and career direction even without the award? If the answer is yes, you have a sensible starting point. If you are choosing it only because a scholarship exists, take another look at the course content and your budget.

The current academic threshold is an eligibility gate, not a scholarship guarantee. LiU accepts the alternative qualifications listed above and considers institutional rankings. Those criteria were introduced for 2026; check for changes when the 2027 call appears. Meeting them puts you in contention, not automatically on the winners’ list.

Build a LiU application your documents can support

You need a recognised bachelor’s equivalent to a Swedish bachelor’s, the required subject background and accepted English evidence. Start with the programme’s admission requirements and compare them with your transcript, course by course.

For example, Computer Science requires specified computing and mathematics preparation. Ethnic and Migration Studies accepts several relevant humanities and social-science backgrounds. These are different academic routes: a good GPA does not make every master’s a suitable match. Find the programme where your previous studies do the talking.

Still finishing your bachelor’s? LiU allows eligible final-year applicants with at least 150 ECTS equivalent completed and official university evidence of expected graduation. Arrange the required certification through the registrar, examinations office or equivalent office, alongside your available transcripts.

Deal with English early enough to leave time for a second attempt if needed. The general IELTS Academic benchmark is 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5. Recognised prior studies can sometimes meet the requirement, but the accepted route depends on your educational background and country instructions. An English-medium degree is not an automatic exemption for everyone.

Gather your passport, degree documents, transcripts, required translations and English evidence. If a prerequisite subject is unclear from a course title, prepare its syllabus. LiU generally does not request a CV, recommendation letters or a motivation letter for admission; Design is an exception with its own required materials. Spend your preparation time on what your chosen programme actually asks for.

Would a tuition reduction make Sweden affordable for you?

A partial tuition scholarship still leaves you responsible for the remaining fee and your living costs. Give the budget the same attention as the application. Accommodation, food, transport and course literature will not disappear because your tuition invoice becomes smaller.

Try a simple illustration: if your programme’s tuition were SEK 160,000 and your award covered 50%, you would still need SEK 80,000 for tuition, plus living and travel costs. This is a budgeting example, not a quoted LiU programme fee. Use your chosen programme’s actual 2027 price before deciding whether the plan works.

Create two budgets: one with an award and one without. If only the first is affordable, decide in advance what you will do if funding does not come through. That is a much easier decision to make calmly now than after an admission offer arrives.

For broader funding, investigate Swedish Institute scholarships against your nationality, programme and experience. An SI award supersedes the LiU scholarship. Also plan beyond arrival: current LiU renewal rules require passing 75% of first-year courses, with results registered by 1 July, to retain funding for the following year.

Your Linköping application plan, from October to admission day

Prepare for admission now; prepare to respond promptly to the scholarship invitation after selection. Here is a practical sequence:

  1. Choose your academic fit: Use LiU’s master’s application guide to reach the programme catalogue and review autumn 2027 requirements. Keep a checklist of any missing evidence.
  2. Apply from 16 October 2026: Create or reuse your account at UniversityAdmissions.se. You can select up to four master’s programmes, but rank your intended LiU programme first. Submit and finalise that ranking by 15 January 2027.
  3. Finish the file by 1 February 2027: Follow the country-specific document instructions and pay the SEK 900 application fee if required. Review your account for missing items. Late documents can remove your scholarship eligibility even if a programme still accepts late admission applications.
  4. Watch for the 1 April admission result: Check your account and the email address you registered, including spam. Keep your application number accessible so you can act without hunting through old messages.
  5. Respond when the scholarship call opens: Follow the invitation and official LiU scholarship instructions. The current process uses a short window and requires no additional supporting documents. Confirm the 2027 form, terms and closing time when published.

Your most useful preparation task this week? Identify one suitable master’s, list its prerequisites and request any missing document. You do not need an open scholarship form to make that progress.
