The World Maritime University (WMU) is accepting applications for its WMU–LRF Africa Programme PhD Fellowship in Malmö, Sweden, with a planned start by April 2027. Supported by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, this doctoral opportunity explores how maritime training and employment can create better careers for African seafarers.
Could your background in education, social sciences or maritime affairs help answer that question? Applicants originating from Sub-Saharan Africa receive preference. This guide explains the research fit, financial support and application sequence, including a language-rule discrepancy worth resolving before submission.
01What research will WMU support?
Your project must investigate seafaring opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa. Maritime education and training (MET), employment access, or a focused connection between them can provide your starting point.
| Research route | Possible focus |
|---|---|
| Education and training | How training prepares seafarers for employment. |
| Labour markets | What helps or prevents African seafarers entering employment. |
Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods are accepted. You may study selected countries or institutions; a continent-wide investigation is unnecessary. The fellow also contributes research support to programme activities alongside the thesis and publications. I would prioritise one answerable question, then explain the evidence needed to answer it. Our research proposal guide can help you develop that reasoning; WMU’s instructions govern the submission.
02What does the WMU–LRF fellowship cover?
The award covers tuition and provides approximately SEK 22,000 monthly for living and related expenses, for up to four years subject to satisfactory annual progress. Stipend increases are reviewed at progression seminars and depend on performance and available funding.
Research travel, conferences, publication charges and software may receive additional support with approval. Residence and on-site work in Malmö are mandatory; remote participation is unavailable. The published terms do not promise dependent allowances or relocation flights, so avoid including these as guaranteed benefits in your budget.
03Who can apply, and which English rule applies?
Applicants need a completed master’s degree with a dissertation in MET, political or social sciences, maritime affairs, or another relevant discipline. Current residence does not determine eligibility; the regional preference is not expressed as an exclusive nationality restriction. Maritime experience is advantageous, and qualified women are encouraged to apply.
WMU also expects research ability, analytical writing, appropriate methodological knowledge and stakeholder collaboration skills. Its general doctoral requirements include computer competence.
The fellowship accepts IELTS 7.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 96 or above or paper-based 590 or above, Cambridge Proficiency grade A/B, or a good GCE O-level/equivalent pass. However, the general PhD page lists TOEFL iBT 80+ and 4–6 on the newer scale. I recommend obtaining written clarification from WMU before relying on the lower threshold or the newer scale. An automatic English-medium-degree waiver is not stated.
04How do you apply for the WMU–LRF fellowship?
Submit through WMU’s doctoral portal and arrange references separately. Start with the official fellowship notice and its downloadable Terms of Reference.
- Develop your proposal. Set out the research question, contribution, methods, geographical scope, data sources and feasibility. Explain how your study fits the fellowship.
- Prepare the required uploads. Complete the WMU PhD Application Form and Research Proposal; add a one-page motivation letter, CV, certified degree certificates and transcripts, English evidence and passport data page.
- Use the exact fellowship identifier. Identify the motivation letter as “WMU–LRF Africa Programme PhD Fellowship 2026”, even though the anticipated start is in 2027.
- Submit to WMU. Open the PhD in Maritime Affairs programme page and follow “Apply Online”. The call does not state a separate application fee; do not mistake general tuition figures for an application charge.
- Arrange two academic references. Referees must send letters directly to [email protected], using the same fellowship identifier as the email subject.
Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted; an online interview may follow. Fellowship or research-fit questions can be directed to Africa Programme Officer Dofilia Kaloia at [email protected].
05Which mistakes could weaken your application?
- Keep a clear connection to African seafarers; a generic shipping proposal will not demonstrate the required fit.
- Give referees time to send their letters directly. Your portal submission does not replace their separate task.
- Plan around the fellowship’s residence requirement, despite the broader PhD programme offering more flexible arrangements.
06What else should WMU applicants know?
Do I need a supervisor acceptance letter?
The fellowship checklist does not require one. Informal contact is welcome, and proposal assessment helps identify additional supervisors.
Must I be an experienced seafarer?
No seafaring-service requirement is stated. Relevant maritime experience helps, but applicants must demonstrate the academic preparation and research skills the project needs.
Is this a salaried Swedish employment contract?
The notice describes a fellowship stipend. It does not establish an employment contract or employee benefits, so assess the offer on its stated fellowship terms.
07When should you submit your WMU application?
The WMU–LRF Africa Programme PhD Fellowship has no fixed final closing date: applications remain open until a candidate is selected. WMU lists the first review for 30 November 2026 at 23:59 CET (UTC+1). Aim to have your complete application and references ready for that review; subsequent applications are considered on a rolling basis.
The desired starting date is no later than 1 April 2027. Treat the first review as your working target, rather than relying on the opportunity remaining available afterward.
