Sweden KTH Scholarship 2027: Prepare Your Application Before Funding Opens

The KTH Scholarship 2027 in Sweden offers full tuition funding for fee-paying international students entering eligible master’s programmes at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Its reach includes fields such as architecture, computing, engineering and life sciences, giving applicants with different academic interests a reason to explore it. The next scholarship round is officially announced, and you can begin preparing before the funding application opens.

The most useful preparation starts with the degree you want to pursue. Which KTH programme builds on your qualifications and gives you the knowledge you need for your next step? Answering that question helps you choose a suitable course and explain why its training matters to your academic or professional plans.

That choice also gives the scholarship a practical financial meaning. Tuition coverage can remove a substantial cost, but you will still need a way to pay for life in Stockholm. Looking at programme fit and your remaining budget together helps you decide whether this is an opportunity you could take up if selected.

You can then prepare the evidence needed to support that decision. KTH uses your admission documents when assessing the scholarship, so the work begins with a strong master’s application and continues through a separate funding form. This guide follows that route, helping you move from choosing your degree to submitting both applications.

Before you begin, keep the institution names clear: KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institutet (KI) are separate institutions with separate scholarships. For KI’s opportunity, use our Karolinska Institutet Scholarship 2027 application guide. The guidance below concerns KTH.

Could a tuition scholarship unlock your KTH master’s?

Timing: Degree applications open before the scholarship form. See the complete schedule.
Official information checked: 13 October 2026.

01 Choose an eligible degree that builds on your qualifications

The KTH Scholarship supports eligible master’s programmes, and you must meet the admission requirements of the degree you choose. You need a recognized qualification equivalent to a Swedish bachelor’s degree and the programme’s required subject background. Final-year bachelor’s students can also apply with the prescribed ongoing-study documents. Use your transcript to match your previous coursework to a degree that supports what you want to do next.

That academic match must also fall within the award’s funding scope. Eligible choices include master’s programmes with both years spent at KTH, the joint programmes Molecular Techniques in Life Science and Biostatistics and Data Science, and the one-year Architectural Lighting Design programme. Joint Erasmus+ and EIT programmes, and Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering, are excluded from this scholarship.

Your tuition-fee status determines whether this award is relevant to you. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens generally do not pay application or tuition fees, while other international students usually do, although exemptions exist. This award is for applicants required to pay tuition; for those applicants, the next decision is how much of the study budget the scholarship would remove.

02 Understand what tuition funding would make possible

The award covers tuition for the eligible programme, while living costs remain your responsibility. The value can be considerable: most two-year programmes completed entirely at KTH have a total tuition fee of SEK 385,000, although fees vary by programme. For a two-year scholarship, second-year tuition coverage depends on satisfactory first-year study results.

Removing that tuition leaves a smaller, separate budget to finance: accommodation, food, transport, travel and settling-in expenses. KTH’s published examples show three students spending between SEK 7,850 and SEK 13,000 per month in 2026. These are individual spending examples, rather than a guaranteed minimum or the financial requirement for a residence permit.

Build your own budget around those expenses and identify the savings, sponsorship or other support you could use. You now have two useful foundations for the application: a degree that fits your qualifications and a financial plan for taking up an award. The admission file should explain and document the academic side of that plan.

03 Prepare the admission file that will support your scholarship

Prepare your master’s admission documents first, because KTH will also use them to assess your scholarship application. Start with official academic records and English evidence, then add the supporting material required by your chosen programme. Requirements differ across degrees, so build the file around that programme’s instructions.

English evidence deserves early attention because arranging a test may take longer than gathering documents you already hold. KTH requires English 6/English Level 2. IELTS Academic applicants need 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5; IELTS General Training is not accepted. Recognized previous-study routes can also satisfy the requirement, including qualifying degrees with English as the main subject and specified studies in eligible countries. Studying in English does not automatically establish an exemption.

With your academic and language route identified, organize the rest of the admission file. The following checklist separates the evidence you submit from the ideas you prepare for the scholarship form.

Material Preparation and purpose
Degree or final-year evidence and official transcripts Obtain the documents required for your country of study; use your course record to demonstrate the programme’s academic prerequisites.
English proof and identification Prepare accepted language evidence and a passport or other permitted identification document for admission.
Programme-specific supporting material Prepare the documents or forms requested by your chosen degree, following its stated submission route.
Sustainability motivation Prepare ideas for the scholarship form: connect your experience, the skills you want to gain and a practical future contribution. This is preparation, not an additional required document.

Those records establish what you have studied and achieved; your scholarship motivation explains where you want to take that experience. KTH considers grades, the university awarding your degree, relevant research, work, teaching and other achievements, together with your intended contribution to sustainable development.

Build that contribution from something concrete in your field. A computing project might inspire more accessible services; design experience might lead towards reducing material waste; research might point towards better tools for health. Explain the problem, the knowledge you need and how you could use it. This gives your programme choice and previous experience a shared purpose when you reach the application form.

04 Follow the admission and scholarship sequence

Apply for your KTH master’s through University Admissions, then complete KTH’s separate scholarship form. The admission application supplies the academic evidence you have prepared; the funding form lets you put forward your scholarship case. Submitting only the degree application does not apply you for the award.

  1. Finalise the file for your chosen degree. Use KTH’s programme requirements directory to access its exact academic and document instructions. Follow the specified route for any separate programme forms.
  2. Submit your degree application and rank your choices. Create an account at University Admissions. You can choose up to four programmes, but the eligible KTH degree you want funded must be your first priority. This scholarship cannot fund your second, third or fourth choice.
  3. Pay the admission application fee and submit your evidence. Fee-paying applicants pay SEK 900. KTH requires payment for scholarship eligibility, so pay before submitting the scholarship form. Upload admission documents early enough to address any missing material.
  4. Submit the separate funding form when it opens. Apply through the official KTH Scholarship page, using your prepared motivation to answer its actual questions. No additional scholarship documents are required; KTH assesses the admission documents you submitted.
  5. Follow the admission and scholarship outcomes. Both applications are now in place, but an admission offer alone does not guarantee an award. If selected for funding, bring together your admission, tuition support and living-cost plan before arranging your move.

The important timing consequence is that you apply for funding before admission results arrive. Prepare both stages together, so you can complete the scholarship form during its application window rather than waiting for an offer.

05 Resolve the Remaining application Questions

The sequence above answers where and how to apply. The following questions address situations that can affect when your file is ready and how you interpret the funding decision.

Can I apply before finishing my bachelor’s degree?

Yes, final-year students can apply with the prescribed ongoing-study documentation. Prepare your official current academic record and final-year evidence, while ensuring your studies meet the selected programme’s subject requirements.

Do I need an admission offer before requesting the scholarship?

No; you need to submit your master’s application first, then apply for funding during the scholarship window. KTH assesses admission and scholarship applications in parallel, so waiting for the admission result would miss the funding application stage.

Would winning the scholarship make studying in Sweden cost-free?

No; the award covers tuition and does not provide a living allowance. Keep your housing, food, travel and other personal costs in the separate budget you would use to take up your place.

06 Use the confirmed dates to pace your preparation

The last date to apply for the KTH Scholarship offered by KTH Royal Institute of Technology is 15 January 2027. The scholarship application period runs from 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027.

Your master’s application comes first: University Admissions opens for this round on 16 October 2026, and programme applications and ranking must be completed by 15 January 2027. Supporting admission documents and the application fee are due by 1 February 2027; for scholarship eligibility, pay the fee before submitting the funding form.

Master’s admission and KTH Scholarship results are scheduled for 1 April 2027, ahead of studies starting in August 2027. Use the time before the scholarship opening to choose your eligible degree, obtain the documents that take longest to prepare and develop your sustainability motivation. Those actions give you a clear starting point now and a prepared application when the funding window arrives.
