The EMerald Erasmus Mundus Master in Georesources Engineering, coordinated by the University of Liège in Belgium, is accepting scholarship applications for September 2027. Its two-year European programme connects mineral resources, engineering and recycling, with participation costs covered and €1,400 monthly for selected scholars.
How do you turn mineral deposits—or discarded materials—into useful resources? EMerald approaches that question through characterisation, processing, modelling and management. You study across partner universities rather than spending both years on one campus.
The practical challenge is proving that your degree and mathematics training fit an engineering master’s. This guide explains the study route, funding, eligibility and application—including the required personal video.

01Where will you study with EMerald?
You begin in Belgium, continue in France, then choose Sweden or Germany for your third-semester specialisation.
University of Liège
Semester 1 · Resources and processing foundations
University of Lorraine
Semester 2 · Advanced processing and resource management
Luleå University of Technology
Semester 3 option · Primary raw materials
TU Bergakademie Freiberg
Semester 3 option · Secondary raw materials and recycling
Semester 4 is thesis work at one of the four partners, depending on your topic. The consortium spans four countries; attendance in all four is not guaranteed. I would choose a specialisation by the materials you want to work with, then connect that interest to your previous projects.
02What does the EMerald scholarship cover?
The Erasmus Mundus award covers participation costs and pays €1,400 monthly for 24 months. The allowance contributes towards travel, visas, settling in and daily living expenses; these are not advertised as separate extra payments.
| Funding route | What applicants should understand |
|---|---|
| Erasmus Mundus full award | 2027 call available; allowance plus participation costs paid to the coordinating university. |
| Self-funded / fee waiver | A reduced participation fee does not provide the full scholarship’s living allowance. |
| Other listed grants | EIT RawMaterials funding is marked unavailable for 2027; the Liège partial-grant entry still refers to 2026. |
Previous EMJM scholarship recipients cannot receive another EMJM award. Admission itself does not guarantee funding: scholarships go to the highest-ranked applicants.
03Does your qualification meet EMerald’s rules?
You need an eligible degree and at least 22.5 ECTS of university-level mathematics. The accepted backgrounds include:
- An engineering bachelor’s of at least three years/180 ECTS with basic geology knowledge.
- Minerals, mining, chemical, geological or metallurgical engineering; materials engineering oriented towards metals extraction and processing.
- A master’s degree in geology.
A geology bachelor’s alone is not the geology qualification explicitly listed. If your university uses different credits, provide its official ECTS conversion where available, or its grading and credit-system explanation. I recommend resolving this evidence before spending time on your video.
For English, the published options include TOEFL 87, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120 or accepted official B2–C1 evidence. The FAQ permits a university document confirming English as your previous language of instruction.
04How to apply for the EMerald scholarship
Submit one complete online EMerald application through the University of Liège programme portal.
- Check your fit. Read the official admission requirements and 2027 funding conditions. Select the full Erasmus Mundus scholarship route.
- Prepare your uploads. Gather your passport, birth certificate, ID photo, high-school diploma, higher-education diploma and transcripts, English evidence and relevant recommendation letter. Add a one-page English CV and one-page English motivation letter. If you have been outside university, include evidence of your activities over the last five years. Follow the certified-copy and translation instructions; originals are needed later.
- Record your two-minute video. Explain why EMerald fits your goals and how your background prepares you. Follow the official video instructions: appear on camera, use your natural voice and submit an unlisted YouTube URL, or an accessible alternative platform link.
- Create your account and submit. Use a computer, as the programme advises, to register on the official EMerald application portal. Complete the scholarship form, attach every required document and insert your video link. Incomplete applications are not considered.
- Prepare for selection. The 40 highest-rated applicants are invited to interview. Alongside motivation and academic background, expect discussion of a scientific paper sent beforehand. My advice is to practice explaining a paper’s question, method and limitations in plain language.
05Which application mistakes should you avoid?
06EMerald applicant questions
Can final-year students apply?
Yes. Submit available transcripts, courses in progress and a document stating your expected graduation. Your degree must be completed before the September semester starts.
Must I post paper documents?
No. Application documents are uploaded online. Keep the originals ready for later verification and enrolment.
Is there a compulsory online entrance quiz?
The current 2027 application page describes document assessment followed by an interview, including a scientific-paper discussion. It does not list a compulsory online quiz; follow the current portal instructions rather than older applicant reports.
