AMASE Material Sciences Master’s Scholarship 2027: Application Process for Erasmus Mundus Project Open

The AMASE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027 offers a fully funded route to a European master’s in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, with tuition covered and a monthly living allowance. The 2027/28 call is open to eligible applicants worldwide, although EUSMAT currently reports that its online submission system is temporarily disabled.

Coordinated by Saarland University’s European School of Materials, AMASE combines two years of study at two partner universities with a double Master of Science degree. Its appeal is the chance to develop a materials specialism across different academic environments. But which university combination fits your languages, and does every scholarship cover living costs? Those choices determine how you should prepare.

AMASE 2027: choose your funding and study route
Status: Call open; submission system temporarily disabled.
Audience: Eligible EU and non-EU graduates; subject restrictions apply.
Degree: Two-year double M.Sc.; study at two universities.
Funding: Full and partial Erasmus Mundus awards available; living support differs.
Language: University-specific evidence; no universal IELTS waiver.
Application fee: No separate application charge stated in the published instructions.
Timing: Entrance university determines the scholarship deadline.
Official information checked: 22 October 2026.

01 · What does the AMASE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship cover?

The full AMASE scholarship combines tuition coverage with a living allowance; the partial award does not include monthly support. Compare the offer types before deciding what you can afford:

Funding route What you receive Budget consequence
Full Erasmus Mundus scholarship €1,400 monthly for 24 months, four semesters of participation fees and basic EU health insurance. Accommodation, travel and visa expenses come from your allowance; no separate additional funding.
Partial Erasmus Mundus scholarship Four semesters of participation fees and basic EU health insurance. No monthly allowance; arrange your own living and mobility budget.
Self-financing admission A study place without an Erasmus Mundus award. Participation fees: €1,500 per semester for the programme’s EU category; €4,500 for its non-EU category, plus living expenses.

My recommendation is to assess any partial offer against a realistic two-country living budget before accepting. The full award provides €33,600 in living support over the regular programme; additional semesters are outside its normal funding period.

02 · Which countries can you study in through AMASE?

AMASE has six partner countries, but your normal study route uses two universities. Your options span northern, central and southern Europe:

🇩🇪 GERMANY

Saarbrücken · UdS

Saarland University

Study language: German

🇸🇪 SWEDEN

Luleå · LTU

Luleå University of Technology

Study language: English

🇫🇷 FRANCE

Nancy · UL

Université de Lorraine

Study language: French

🇪🇸 SPAIN

Barcelona · UPC

Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

Study language: Spanish

🇦🇹 AUSTRIA

Leoben · MUL

Montanuniversität Leoben

Study language: English

🇮🇹 ITALY

Padua · UNIPD

University of Padua

Study language: English

Your route through Europe: Year 1 at your Entrance University → Semester 3 at your Second University → Semester 4 thesis at either university. You do not study in all six countries.

The shared Integration Week and Professional Summer School bring AMASE students together in Saarbrücken, adding a common programme experience to your two-university route.

The AMASE track structure covers advanced metallic materials, polymers and composites, smart surfaces and functional materials, advanced processing technologies, and bio/nano materials. Availability varies by university, so choose your specialism alongside your destination.

Language matters: the official FAQ requires two different teaching languages and rules out an entirely English-taught pairing. I would prioritise a combination you can realistically study in, rather than choosing countries first.

03 · Which graduates qualify for AMASE scholarship consideration?

AMASE targets graduates in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry and related disciplines. A qualifying bachelor’s must represent at least three years of study; final-year students may apply.

However, admission eligibility does not automatically mean scholarship eligibility. The AMASE selection criteria explicitly exclude civil engineering, telecommunications, textile engineering, design, architecture, computational science and informatics degrees from scholarships, with admission considered only exceptionally.

Selection considers academic performance, relevant subject preparation, motivation, language skills and research or industry experience. Around 15% of academic records should relate to mathematics. Use your motivation letter to connect a specific materials problem with the track you want to pursue.

Previous EMJM scholarship recipients cannot receive another EMJM scholarship. Study in your origin/residence country or the country of your last degree can also affect subsistence funding and mobility requirements; applicants with such a connection should resolve their route with EUSMAT before selecting universities.

04 · How do you apply for AMASE admission and funding?

A complete, timely AMASE application automatically enters Erasmus Mundus scholarship consideration. No separate scholarship application is required, but an admission offer does not guarantee funding.

  1. Choose your route. Use the official AMASE overview and track structure to select two Entrance University preferences and two Second University preferences. For broader programme-selection guidance, our Erasmus Mundus 2027–2028 application guide explains consortium applications and scholarship selection.
  2. Prepare evidence. Gather your degree certificate, transcript, passport and language proof, plus an English CV and motivation letter, each limited to one page. Final-year applicants need an official registrar/examinations-office letter confirming final-year status and expected graduation.
  3. Make your documents specific. Our Europass CV guide can help organise relevant achievements, although AMASE does not mandate Europass and its one-page limit still applies. Use our scholarship motivation-letter guidance to plan your case, keeping the final letter within AMASE’s one-page limit.
  4. Arrange references. Name two academic or professional referees; the system contacts them for English PDF recommendations.
  5. Meet university-specific rules. Use the official document and language requirements, including country-specific certification or transcript dispatch instructions. English test thresholds and exemptions differ between universities.
  6. Match the funding and timing rules. Read the official scholarship conditions, selection criteria and 2027 deadline schedule before finalising your preferences. The AMASE FAQ also explains mobility and language obligations.
  7. Submit through EUSMAT. The official AMASE application page will provide the portal when its technical issue is resolved. Use a non-Gmail address, as EUSMAT reports notification-delivery problems with Gmail.
  8. Complete the submission and follow the decision. Incomplete applications are rejected. Successful applicants must present originals or certified copies on arrival and follow their universities’ enrolment instructions.

05 · AMASE questions worth settling before submission

The official AMASE FAQ helps resolve these remaining decisions.

Can I apply before learning my second university’s language?

Yes, for some combinations, provided you learn it during the first year. MUL has an English-proof requirement even when selected second; a Saarland route requires an official German B1 certificate before graduation.

Does an English-medium bachelor’s automatically waive IELTS?

No. The detailed requirements provide specific exemptions depending on the university and where you studied; an English-medium letter from any country is not a blanket waiver.

Can I defer an AMASE place for a year?

No, AMASE does not preserve your place for the following intake. If you cannot join, you must apply again and undergo a new selection.

06 · AMASE 2027 scholarship and admission deadlines

The last date to apply for AMASE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship consideration is 15 January 2027 if Luleå University of Technology is your Entrance University. For UPC, Saarland University, Université de Lorraine, Montanuniversität Leoben or the University of Padua as Entrance University, the last date is 15 February 2027. These scholarship dates apply to both EU and non-EU candidates.

For self-financing applicants in EUSMAT’s third-country category, the admission deadline is 31 March 2027 at all six entrance universities. For its EU/associated-country category, it is 31 March 2027 at LTU and 31 May 2027 at the other five. The programme’s classification also considers relevant European study/work residence history.

Self-financing LTU entrants must pay participation fees before 1 May 2027. The later self-funded admission window does not extend scholarship consideration.
