African Scholarship Programme 2026 at Nordic African Institute

This scholarship provides selected researchers with the opportunity to spend two to three months in Uppsala, Sweden, working on their research in a stimulating and resource-rich environment.
What the Scholarship Covers?
The African Scholarship Programme offers generous support to make your stay stress-free, including:
- Return airfare (economy class) to and from Sweden.
- Accommodation during the scholarship period.
- Daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approx. 40 USD).
- Installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approx. 250 USD).
- Office space and computer access at NAI.
- Library access, including the NAI’s specialized Africa collection and access to Uppsala University libraries.
The stay must last between 60 to 90 days, but note that applications cannot include periods when Nordic institutions are closed or reduced in activity (15 June–15 August and 15 December–15 January).
Who Can Apply?
The programme is designed for early-career African researchers working on Africa-focused topics in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Research proposals should align with the UN Agenda 2030 and the institute’s key focus areas.
You qualify if you are:
- A full-time staff member at an African university or research centre, enrolled in a PhD programme without international funding.
- A postdoctoral researcher within four years of completing your PhD.
The Nordic Africa Institute also emphasizes gender balance and encourages research on gender-related issues and the position of women in society.
