Benefits of AU Scholarship
The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship provides comprehensive coverage of all billable AU expenses, including full tuition, room, and board. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, contingent on maintaining satisfactory academic performance. Additionally, AU offers up to eight partial scholarships valued at up to $40,000 per year and partial scholarship recipients must demonstrate proof of additional funds to cover expenses not included in the scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the AU EGLS, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be an international student requiring a non-immigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) to study in the U.S.
- Should have overcome various obstacles and challenges, with a preference for students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
- Must have a minimum GPA equivalent of 3.8 out of 4.0 or be in the top 10% of their graduating class.
- Demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and advancing the needs of people in their home country.
- Must meet one of the following English proficiency requirements:
- IELTS score of 7.0+ (all subscores must be 6.0 or above)
- TOEFL iBT score of 95+ (all subscores must be 20 or above)
- Cambridge Assessment English score of 185+ (all subscores must be 169 or above)
- SAT Reading subscore of 33+
- ACT English score of 29+
- PTE score of 65+
- SAT Digital version EBRW score of 630+
- Duolingo English Test score of 125+ (all subscores must be 115 or above)
- Must be enrolled in secondary/high school and graduating by June 2025.
Application Documents Requirement
To apply for the AU EGLS, applicants must complete the following steps:
- Common Application or Coalition Application: https://www.american.edu/admissions/international/au-egls-apply.cfm
- AU EGL Scholarship Application and Essays: Submit via the applicant portal by December 1, 2024.
- Bank Letter and AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF): Each must confirm a minimum of $4,000. Upload these via the applicant portal or send them as PDF attachments to [email protected].
- Official English Proficiency Test Scores: Have the testing agency send scores directly to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, DC.
- EducationUSA Support Letter: If applicable, provide a letter from your EducationUSA adviser confirming your candidacy.
Application Deadline
All application materials, including the Common or Coalition application, supporting documents, and AU EGL Scholarship application, must be submitted by December 1, 2024. Applicants should apply for Regular Decision for fall 2025 and will be notified by April 1, 2025.
