About the Opportunity

The position is hosted by the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering at Uppsala University Campus Gotland. You’ll join an interdisciplinary team tackling one of today’s biggest challenges: making shipping sustainable.

Your work will form part of the project “Compressed Hydrogen in Marine Propulsion Systems: Temperature Evolution and Structural Integrity of Onboard Components,” funded by Trafikverket. This project explores how compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH₂) can safely power ships while managing its complex thermodynamic and material behaviors.


Your Research and Duties

As a doctoral student, you’ll engage in cutting-edge work combining engineering, physics, and sustainability science. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing thermodynamic and time-dependent simulations for hydrogen fueling and operation aboard ships.
  • Conducting material testing on composite tanks and steel piping under hydrogen and thermal stress.
  • Creating predictive models for fatigue, embrittlement, and system safety.
  • Evaluating thermal management strategies to enhance energy efficiency in marine hydrogen systems.

You’ll also take part in doctoral courses, collaborate with other universities and industry partners, and possibly teach (up to 20% of your time).


Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the entry requirements for PhD studies in Sweden, including:

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Marine, Energy, or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in mathematics, thermodynamics, energy systems, and programming (Matlab or Python).
  • Excellent English communication skills.

Additional assets:

  • Experience with energy system modeling, CFD tools, or hydrogen system analysis.
  • Proven ability to work across academic and industrial collaborations.
