Austria Ernst Mach Scholarship 2027 Application Process Started Under ASEA-UNINET Program
Austria has opened a scholarship that is unusually easy to misunderstand—and potentially very valuable if you fall into the right applicant group.
The Ernst Mach Grant – ASEA-UNINET 2027/28 offers three routes: a 36-month Full PhD in Austria, a 4-to-6-month postdoctoral research grant, and a nine-month Music Practice award. The programme is financed by Austria’s Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research and administered by OeAD in cooperation with ASEA-UNINET.
The catch? It is restricted to citizens of just Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Which Applicants Can Use It?
The Full PhD Grant is for postgraduate applicants who want to complete an entire doctorate in Austria and have previously studied at a higher-education institution outside Austria.
The Postdoc Grant is narrower: applicants must already be involved in teaching and research at an ASEA-UNINET member university in one of the five eligible countries.
Music applicants can be undergraduate or graduate-level candidates working in instrumental or vocal performance, composition or conducting.
Applicants at undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate level must be 35 or younger, while postdocs may be up to 45. Very good English and/or German is required; PhD applicants must provide English evidence at B2 or C1, depending on their chosen programme.
Why the €1,600 Headline Does Not Mean Every Cost Is Covered
The Full PhD route is clearly the strongest part of this competition: €1,300 monthly scholarship funding plus a €300 monthly mobility subsidy produces €1,600 per month across a potential 36-month doctorate. But OeAD explicitly classifies this as a supplementary grant and warns that applicants need their own funds. Accommodation and health insurance are not paid separately; scholars must meet those expenses themselves, with insurance currently estimated at roughly €55–€200 per month.
Tuition is another detail applicants should not casually translate into “fully waived.” At Austrian public institutions, tuition may be waived upon request, meaning the scholarship itself does not guarantee an automatic universal tuition exemption. Private-university fees are specifically outside this provision.
That makes the scholarship financially strong, but calling every route “fully funded” would overstate the official terms. The better comparison is with a substantial government-supported doctoral stipend that may still require personal budgeting for housing, insurance and certain university costs.
How to Apply — The Austrian Supervisor Comes Before Submission
PhD applicants should follow this order:
- Identify an eligible Austrian ASEA-UNINET member university and suitable doctoral supervisor.
- Develop a 5–10 page research proposal covering the research problem, literature, methodology, expected results, timetable and contribution.
- Obtain a formal Letter of Consent/Acceptance from an eligible Austrian supervisor.
- Arrange two academic recommendation letters; PhD candidates need one recommendation connected with an ASEA-UNINET member university in an eligible home country.
- Prepare B2/C1 English evidence, passport and graduation certificates.
- Submit the scholarship application through the Austrian OeAD/grants system.
- Complete the separate Austrian university admission procedure where required.
A modern detail worth noticing: applicants who use generative AI in preparing their research proposal must disclose that use.
Selection includes formal screening, expert assessment and a personal interview examining language ability, research-proposal quality and project relevance.
Application Deadline
The final deadline for the Ernst Mach Grant – ASEA-UNINET 2027/28 is March 1, 2027.
Because a supervisor’s written acceptance and substantial research proposal are required, this is not a scholarship to begin preparing in late February.
