BeNeFri Switzerland Spring 2027 Scholarships Admissions Open
What if the course that best complements your degree is taught at another Swiss university? BeNeFri lets eligible students at the universities of Bern, Neuchâtel and Fribourg attend partner-university courses while continuing their home studies. For spring 2027, it offers a practical way to broaden your learning, with reimbursement available for eligible train journeys.
The opportunity starts with your existing enrolment and the courses covered by the network’s subject agreements. Can an international student participate, and does registering with BeNeFri automatically make a course count towards a degree? This guide explains the academic choices, registration sequence and travel paperwork that determine whether the programme will work for you.
01 — Who can use BeNeFri for spring 2027?
BeNeFri serves students already enrolled at one of its three partner universities. Bern’s page explains its outgoing route; Fribourg likewise directs visiting BeNeFri students to register through their home university.
For international readers, the decisive starting point is your university enrolment. Studying at an unrelated university overseas does not give you direct access to this registration route. An international student enrolled at a partner should assess the same participating-field and course rules; the published procedure is organized around enrolment rather than a nationality list.
Your subject must also be covered by a BeNeFri agreement. The network does not provide blanket access to every course. My recommendation is to choose a course that fills a real gap in your degree, then settle its recognition with your faculty before building your timetable around it.

02 — What can BeNeFri add to your studies and budget?
BeNeFri expands your course choices and offers limited support for travel between partner cities. Its academic value is access to teaching that complements what your home department offers.
For example, Bern’s Spanish department’s BeNeFri guidance describes bachelor’s and master’s courses in linguistics and literature at Fribourg and Neuchâtel. It requires appropriate equivalences, such as matching a seminar with a seminar. This illustrates why course level, content and assessment matter more than simply finding an appealing title.
Keep those academic decisions separate from your travel claim. The following distinctions help you prepare both without mistaking reimbursement for a full scholarship.
| Part of the opportunity | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Partner courses | Choose within participating subject agreements and resolve degree recognition with your faculty. |
| Train reimbursement | Based on second-class half-fare value between Bern, Fribourg and Neuchâtel stations. |
| Travelcard contribution | At least six trips per semester can qualify for a contribution towards a Half-Fare or GA travelcard, with its purchase receipt. |
| Living expenses | The published scheme does not advertise accommodation, a monthly stipend or international flights. |
For Bern students, reimbursement is paid only into a Swiss bank account. Budget for buying tickets before receiving payment, and keep the evidence from your first journey.

03 — How should a Bern student register and claim travel costs?
Register through Bern first, then complete host course arrangements and preserve attendance evidence. The travel claim comes later and depends on correct semester registration.
- Choose the academic fit. Agree how the partner course will contribute to your study plan. Compare its teaching language, assessment and timetable with your existing commitments.
- Register for the relevant semester. Use Bern’s self-service portal with your campus credentials. Renew registration each semester you participate.
- Activate partner access. Bern forwards participant details to the host institution, which supplies account access. Follow its course and examination procedures alongside your home registration.
- Document each course journey. Following Bern’s travel-claim instructions, enter course dates, titles, locations, fares and lecturers on the form. Print it and obtain the lecturer’s original signature after each course; bus journeys are excluded.
- Submit the completed claim. Sign and scan the form, then email it with receipts and PDF train tickets to [email protected]. Bern requires emailed attachments rather than photographs, physical tickets or postal delivery.
I would prepare the attendance form before your first class. Collecting signatures as you attend is much easier than reconstructing a semester of journeys afterwards.
Fribourg students should follow Fribourg’s BeNeFri procedure, including MyUnifr registration and its own reimbursement destination. Administrative instructions differ by home university, so Bern’s submission address should not be used for every participant.

04 — Which BeNeFri details are easy to misunderstand?
Is BeNeFri a route to a new Swiss degree?
BeNeFri provides partner-course access within existing studies. Applicants seeking their first admission to Bern, Neuchâtel or Fribourg need the relevant university’s ordinary admission route before this mobility option becomes relevant.
Does attending a class guarantee degree credit?
No. Bern states that correct registration is necessary for recognition, while the faculty handles the academic decision. Settle the course’s place in your degree before relying on its credits.
Can a SwissPass replace a travelcard receipt?
No. A contribution towards a Half-Fare or GA travelcard requires the purchase receipt; the SwissPass alone is insufficient. Keep the receipt alongside your journey records.
Does an old host account mean I am registered again?
No. Fribourg notes that a previous participant’s account may remain active, but BeNeFri registration lasts only one semester. Renew participation even if your login still works.

05 — What are the BeNeFri deadlines for spring 2027?
Under the universities’ published recurring spring schedule, the last date to register for BeNeFri for spring 2027 is 28 February 2027. The corresponding travel-reimbursement deadline is 30 June 2027.
These dates apply the standing spring rules published by Bern and Fribourg to the requested semester; they are not evidence of a separately announced spring 2027 call or an already-open portal. Bern’s public page states no specific spring 2027 registration opening date.
Use the University of Bern’s official BeNeFri page for registration rules and the reimbursement form. Preparing your course choice and recognition early gives you time to resolve the academic details before the administrative deadline.
