Canada Graduate Master Scholarships Spring 2027 Application Method
Canada’s Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s competition is open, offering CAD 27,000 for 12 months, with applications due on December 1, 2026. Before you start drafting a research proposal, check the rule that decides whether you can apply: you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person by the deadline. Studying in Canada on a study permit alone does not qualify you.
Qualify on that point? Your next task is to connect three things: an eligible research degree, the right Canadian university and a complete scholarship application. This guide walks you through that sequence so an admission deadline, missing transcript or unfinished reference does not derail your funding application.
Plan your CGRS-M 2027 Application As Per Following Guide
Does your degree and study history fit CGRS M?
Your program must contain substantial, independently assessed research. A thesis, major research project or assessed creative research output can qualify; a coursework-only master’s is typically ineligible. Professional or clinical programs can qualify when they contain significant autonomous research.
For the usual master’s route, you must have completed 0–12 months of full-time-equivalent study by December 31, 2026, counting summer study and time toward the same program at other institutions. Direct-entry, combined and fast-track doctoral routes have specific eligibility rules. A separate 4–12-month rule applies to certain students completing a master’s before activating the award in a subsequent doctorate at the same institution. Ask your graduate awards office to assess your timeline if you are changing degree levels.
You normally need a first-class average in each of your last two completed years of study. The university defines that standard: Western University uses 80% or above. Institutions may exercise discretion for applicants below a first-class average, so ask before ruling yourself out.
Previous federal master’s scholarship funding can also exclude you, including specified Indigenous master’s awards and supplements. You may apply to only one Canada Research Training Awards Suite program per academic year. Check your previous award history before preparing another application.
What does CAD 27,000 cover, and what earns selection?
CGRS M provides a fixed one-year award, so build a budget around CAD 27,000 rather than assuming every expense is covered. That equals CAD 2,250 per month when averaged across the year; it does not establish a monthly payment schedule. Compare tuition, compulsory fees, rent and living costs, then ask your department how this award would interact with its existing funding offer.
The scholarship is jointly administered by CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC. Universities assess applications against three weighted criteria:
- Academic excellence — 50%: Make your academic achievements and distinctions easy to identify.
- Research potential — 30%: Explain a feasible question, a credible method and why the result matters.
- Personal characteristics and interpersonal skills — 20%: Support claims about leadership, communication and collaboration with examples.
Your practical challenge is to make the documents work together. A proposal explaining what you will investigate, a CV showing preparation and referees describing observed abilities make a clearer case than three disconnected accounts of your achievements.
How do you submit a complete CGRS M application?
Submit one scholarship application through the Research Portal, selecting up to three eligible Canadian institutions; apply for university admission separately. Follow this sequence:
- Confirm your host and admission timing. Use the official CGRS M opportunity page to check eligibility and institutional allocations. Ask each graduate program about admission deadlines, language evidence, admission fees and any requirement to submit admission by the scholarship deadline.
- Create your scholarship application. Sign in to the Research Portal, select CGRS M and identify your research field and proposed hosts. Select your current university explicitly if you want it to consider you.
- Prepare the research documents. Follow the official application instructions. Upload a one-page research outline and a separate one-page bibliography, together as the required attachment. Write the outline independently and explain the question, approach and significance.
- Link your Canadian Common CV and upload transcripts. Use the CGRS-Master’s CCV type. Include current undergraduate and graduate records, transfer-credit source records where required, and fall registration even if grades are unavailable. Confirm each host’s transcript rules.
- Invite two referees early. Choose people who know your abilities well. Give them your research proposal, CV and an early completion date. Both assessments must be submitted before you can finish submitting your application; missing references do not earn an extension.
- Validate, export, review and submit. Complete all required sections, export the application PDF, review it, click Submit and accept the terms. Check for the confirmation email and “Received by administrator” status. Submitted applications cannot be revised.
Which dates should you put in your calendar?
Start with your referees and admission calendar now; the scholarship deadline is the final submission point. Contact referees at least four weeks ahead and ask them to submit well before your own deadline. Their account checks should be completed at least 48 hours beforehand.
Results begin on April 1, 2027. An offer requires a response through the portal within 21 days, and funding remains conditional on admission. If you are an alternate, continue checking: subsequent offers may be made until January 31, 2028.
Application deadline: The last date to apply for the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s through CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC is December 1, 2026, before 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The Research Portal opened on September 2, 2026. All scholarship documents and both reference assessments must be complete before you submit. University admission, language-document and admission-fee deadlines are institution-specific; no separate general financial-assistance deadline is stated for CGRS M.
