Canadian Graduate Fellowships 2026 at University of Victoria

Are you aiming to study abroad in 2026 with real support for your research costs and community? The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS) at the University of Victoria welcomes applications for its one-year Graduate Fellowships beginning September 1, 2026.

These awards are designed for MA and PhD students whose projects examine religion in relation to society and culture—past or present. While not a fully-funded package, the CSRS fellowships meaningfully reduce costs and provide a high-impact intellectual home that you can combine with other scholarships to keep your year as close to “study-for-free” as possible.

What’s Offered (Funding & Benefits)

  • Stipend: CAD $6,500 for up to 12 months (prorated for shorter terms).
  • Workspace & Resources: Dedicated office space at CSRS, UVic library & special collections access, mailbox, scanner, and photocopying.
  • Scholarly Community: Invitations to weekly public lectures, daily coffee/tea meetups, workshops, and a lively interdisciplinary cohort.
  • Named Awards Included: CSRS Graduate Student Fellowship, Ian H. Stewart Graduate Student Fellowship, Scales Family Fellowship, and the Rev. Heather J. Lindstedt & Dr. Brian A. Pollick Graduate Student Fellowship (for Art History & Visual Studies).

Tip: Pair this award with external/departmental funding (e.g., tuition waivers, national scholarships, supervisor grants) to further reduce or offset tuition and living costs.

Who Can Apply?

  • Primary audience: Graduate students (MA or PhD)—primarily at UVic, but students from other universities may be considered.
  • Program stage: You should be at the writing stage of your thesis/dissertation during the fellowship period. (One-year MA students in their writing stage are also eligible.)
  • Reapplication rules:
    1. If you previously held a CSRS MA award, you may reapply only at the PhD level.
    2. PhD students may hold a CSRS fellowship once.
  • Award exclusivity: Because the fellowship comes with dedicated office space, fellows generally cannot hold overlapping centre-based awards at UVic. If you win multiple, you must choose one and inform CSRS.
  • For international applicants: You’re welcome to apply. Be mindful that travel, housing, visa, and insurance costs are your responsibility.

Research Themes (What Topics Fit)

Your project should connect religion to society/culture in any era. Examples include:
ethics, health, environment, public policy, gender, sexual identity, technology, conflict, law, art, literature, media, philosophy, and intersections with natural sciences. Religion need not be the sole focus—but it must be a significant component. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.
