Deutschlehren Assistantship Sponsorship Package

The program provides a generous sponsorship package that covers:

  • Monthly stipend (doctoral student rate) adjusted to the host country via DAAD’s Scholarship Calculator.
  • Travel allowance to cover visa fees, medical certificates, vaccinations, and other incidental costs.
  • Health, accident, and liability insurance for the entire stay.
  • Preparatory training through a three-day DAAD seminar on cultural and teaching aspects.
  • Optional benefits, including:
    • Subsidy for language courses at the host country.
    • €700 project allowance for events, workshops, or excursions related to teaching.
    • Travel grants within the host country linked to teaching.
    • Family benefits for spouses/children.
    • Additional support for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

Duration: One academic year (max. 12 months), without extension.


Eligibility Requirements

This assistantship is tailored for graduates in the humanities and social sciences, specifically:

  • Degrees accepted: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or 1st State Examination for Teaching.
  • Academic fields: German Studies, German as a Foreign Language, or Regional Philology. Graduates from other humanities or social sciences may also apply with basic teaching knowledge.
  • Degree must not be older than two years at application time (exceptions possible).
  • Residence requirement: Applicants must have lived mainly in Germany for two years before departure.
  • Language skills: Native-level German required; additional local language skills desirable depending on location.
  • Practical teaching experience is advantageous and may be mandatory in certain host universities.
  • Open to non-German citizens who meet DAAD scholarship requirements.

Application Schedule

The global call for applications for the 2026/27 academic year opens July 15, 2025.

  • Application deadline: November 25, 2025.
  • Selection process: Shortlisted candidates are invited to in-person or digital interviews. Final recommendations are made jointly by a DAAD academic selection committee and the host universities.

Application Process

Applications are submitted online via the DAAD portal. Candidates must prepare: degree certificates, CV, motivation letter, proof of teaching or language experience (if applicable), and references. After submission, DAAD reviews applications, conducts interviews, and forwards recommendations to host universities. Once accepted by the host, successful applicants receive their official scholarship award.
