The Early Career Development Fellowship in English is now accepting applications, offering talented postdoctoral researchers an unparalleled chance to teach, publish, and grow in one of the world’s most respected English departments.


What Is the Fellowship All About?

Hosted by the Department of English Language & Literature within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, this fellowship is part of a broader initiative to nurture the next generation of academics. Ten fixed-term posts are up for grabs – two three-year roles and eight two-year roles – designed to support early-career researchers in building a strong foundation in both teaching and academic research.

The successful candidate will join a university steeped in legacy, with alumni like Nobel Laureates and literary legends, and a department recognized globally for its excellence in English literary studies. Fellows will also benefit from rich interdisciplinary connections, including partnerships like the one with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.


Funding Package & Salary Benefits

Fellows appointed to this role will receive:

  • Annual Salary: £44,355 – £51,735 (inclusive of London Weighting Allowance)
  • Contract Duration: Full-time fixed term until 31 August 2028

Who Can Apply? – Eligibility Criteria

This opportunity is open to early-career academics worldwide, provided they meet the following:

Essential Requirements

    • A PhD awarded within the last seven (07) years in a relevant field
    • Strong research focus on English literature from 1800 to the present
    • Experience in teaching undergraduate modules, particularly in subjects like:
      • Writing London
      • Reading Poetry
      • Introduction to American Literature
      • Writing Race, Writing Gender
      • Introduction to Eighteenth-Century Literature: Gothic
    • Demonstrated research potential with scope for high-quality publications and future grants
    • Some experience with academic administration and/or collaborative networking

Desirable Qualifications

    • Higher education teaching certification (e.g., Associate Fellowship or Fellowship of the HEA)
    • Experience designing or delivering online teaching content.
