EDUFI Finland Fellowship 2026 to Start Your PhD Research
Are you a passionate student from outside Finland looking to start your doctoral research abroad? Here’s a golden chance—Finland is calling! The EDUFI Fellowship 2026 is a fully funded opportunity designed to support talented international PhD students for short-term research work in any Finnish university across all academic fields.
What Is the EDUFI Fellowship?
The EDUFI Fellowship is a grant-funded research program created to boost international research collaboration in Finland. It offers funding for 3 to 12 months to foreign postgraduate (doctoral-level) students who are invited by a Finnish university. It is primarily aimed at those just starting their PhD work, planning to complete a double degree, or conducting research visits to Finland.
EDUFI Finnish Fellowship Grant Package
The EDUFI Fellowship provides a monthly grant of €1,900 to support the living expenses of international doctoral students during their stay in Finland. This amount is transferred directly to the fellow by the hosting Finnish university, which receives the grant as a lump sum from EDUFI.
It’s important to note that this grant is strictly meant to cover daily living costs and does not include separate funding for travel expenses, visa fees, health insurance, or accommodation. Additionally, each fellow can receive EDUFI funding for a maximum of 12 months in total—whether used continuously or spread over multiple shorter fellowship periods.
Who Can Apply?
Only Finnish university departments can submit applications—but they do so on behalf of international students. If you’re a student outside Finland interested in this opportunity:
- Contact a professor or department at a Finnish university willing to host and supervise your doctoral research.
- The student must have completed a master’s degree and not lived in Finland for more than one year at the time of application.
- All nationalities and study fields are welcome.
Special Note for Ukrainian Students: Those forced to flee Ukraine due to the war since 2022 are eligible for an extended fellowship period of up to 12 months, even if enrolled at Ukrainian universities.
Application Timeline
The EDUFI Fellowship operates on a rolling application basis, which means there’s no fixed deadline to apply—giving you the flexibility to plan your research journey. However, make sure your application is submitted at least five months before your intended start date in Finland to allow sufficient time for processing.
Speaking of processing, it typically takes about three months, though delays can occur during the summer months. With a competitive success rate of 35–40%, it’s a fantastic opportunity worth preparing for with care and attention.
