EMMIR Scholarship 2027-2029 for Master Degree in Migration and Intercultural Relations Open

EMMIR Erasmus Mundus Scholarship applications are open for the 2027–2029 intake, with a deadline of 20 December 2026. Interested in migration, displacement or how communities live together across cultural boundaries? This two-year master’s combines those questions with study in Germany and Norway, followed by an individual academic and internship pathway.

Your first check is straightforward: can you document a completed bachelor’s or equivalent first degree by the scholarship deadline? EMMIR requires this for funding consideration. Then decide whether you need the full monthly scholarship or could afford a place that waives participation fees but leaves living costs to you.

Which EMMIR funding route can you afford?
Status: Edition 14 applications open; studies begin 1 September 2027.
Applicants: International candidates with a relevant first degree and suitable academic preparation.
Programme: European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations; two-year joint master’s.
Scholarship: €1,400 monthly for 24 months; participation costs, health insurance, registration and student service fees covered.
Other routes: Non-fee-paying self-funded or fee-paying self-funded places.
English: Documented proficiency; published IELTS minimum 6.5, with alternative evidence and waiver routes.
Application fee: Not stated in the reviewed official guidance.
Scholarship and fee-waiver deadline: 20 December 2026, 23:59 CET.
Fee-paying deadline: Places may fill earlier; final deadline 15 July 2027.
Official information checked: 5 October 2026.

Is your degree ready for scholarship consideration?

Scholarship applicants must document a completed first degree by 20 December 2026; the minimum final grade is C+ or its equivalent. A transcript confirming all required examinations are completed, including the final grade, can establish completion.

Relevant fields include social sciences, history, cultural studies, education, law, economics, development studies and journalism. You must also demonstrate knowledge of migration, intercultural relations and empirical methods.

Ask yourself: which course, research paper or professional assignment proves that preparation? Give a specific example instead of relying on your degree title.

If your latest degree is more than five years old, explain your return to university. Already hold a master’s? Justify the need for another. Previous EMJM scholarship recipients cannot receive an additional EMJM scholarship.

What will EMMIR fund, and where will you study?

The full scholarship provides €1,400 monthly for 24 months, while a non-fee-paying place provides no living stipend. Scholarship holders budget travel, visas, vaccinations and residence permits from the monthly allowance; there are no additional travel or installation payments.

Non-fee-paying students have participation costs, insurance and university fees covered but fund their living and mobility expenses. Fee-paying students pay €4,500 per semester, plus living and travel costs. If you need a visa as a self-funded student, you must demonstrate sufficient financial resources.

Your first year starts in Oldenburg, Germany, then moves to Stavanger, Norway. The third semester combines a focus module and project-based internship through the partner network in Europe, Africa or Asia. The final semester centres on thesis research and writing.

Think beyond the destination: which migration issue could connect your coursework, internship and thesis? EMMIR awards a joint degree and can prepare you for research, migration policy, humanitarian work and related professional fields.

Could your previous studies satisfy the English requirement?

Yes—EMMIR permits documented English-medium study or professional English use as evidence and offers waiver categories. The consortium can still request further proof or verify your skills.

The published test chart lists IELTS 6.5, and language certificates are valid for two years. If relying on previous study, obtain official evidence of the teaching language. For professional experience, prepare employer evidence rather than simply writing “fluent English” on your CV.

Native English speakers must demonstrate a second language relevant to migration studies by the deadline. Decide early which evidence you will submit; a waiver request needs supporting documentation.

How do you build and submit your EMMIR application?

Apply through eMundus and explicitly select the funding options you want considered. Take these steps:

  1. Check your evidence: Review the EMMIR entry requirements. Connect your academic preparation to a clear migration-related interest.
  2. Register: Open the eMundus application portal and choose “EMMIR APPLICATION edition 14 2027 – 2029”.
  3. Prepare your file: Follow the application instructions. Upload PDF copies of your passport, CV, statement of purpose of no more than two pages, degree and transcript, language evidence and relevant supporting records. Add official English translations where required.
  4. Check and submit: Enter referee email addresses; do not upload reference letters. Use a non-Outlook-family email address as EMMIR advises. Review everything before submitting because changes are unavailable afterwards. Aim to submit at least 48 hours early and retain your confirmation.

Make your statement personal and precise: identify a migration question, show the experience that led you to it and explain how EMMIR would help you investigate it.

When must you submit, and what happens after selection?

The last date to apply for the EMMIR Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027–2029, coordinated by the University of Oldenburg, is 20 December 2026 at 23:59 CET. Non-fee-paying self-funded applicants share this deadline. Fee-paying applications close when places are filled, or no later than 15 July 2027.

Notifications for the main selection round are expected from early April 2027. If offered a place, follow the notification’s ten-calendar-day deadline to dispatch the required certified hardcopies and provide shipment tracking. Admission documentation depends on verification; reserve-list offers may follow in May or June.

Start with three practical actions: confirm your degree-completion evidence, choose your funding options and draft your migration question. These decisions will give the rest of your application a clear direction before the December deadline.
